Lillian Bauder.
But for many Detroit-area
Jews, questions remain as to
the motives of the teachers
and the attitude towards
Jewish students at the
prestigious, tranquil, tree-
lined campus in Bloomfield
Hills. This is despite the re-
lease last week of a somewhat
reassuring report by an inde-
pendent committee on the
1981-1982 applications inci-
dent and last week's decision
by Cranbrook officials not to
renew the contracts of the
three teachers involved.
"There were so many (junior
kindergarten) applicants that
year," Dr. Bauder explained,
"and the people working in
admissions were so stretched
by their workload, that by de-

were believed by the teachers
to have at least one Jewish
parent. Documents in their
application files were marked
with concentric circles, or
bagel-like symbols, to denote
Jewish parentage, an assump-
tion the teachers made based
on names or, in some cases,
the nursery schools the chil-
dren had attended. All three
teachers told the investigative
committee that the distinc-
tions were made in order to
evenly split the Jewish stu-
