Reagan Aide
Meets Top Israelis
Jerusalem (JTA) — Premier
Shimon Peres and Deputy Pre-
mier and Foreign Minister Yit-
zhak Shamir had a joint meeting
here Monday with the Reagan
Administration's top Middle East
aide, Richard Murphy, the assis-
tant secretary of state for near
Eastern and South Asian affairs.
But Murphy, who arrived from
Amman where he met with King
Hussein of Jordan over the
weekend, and the two Israeli
leaders, issued no statement fol-
lowing their meeting. (Murphy
also was scheduled to visit Syria
during his Mideast trip.)
Murphy apparently did not
bring with him, or did not show
his Israeli hosts, a list of seven
prominent Palestinians who have
been proposed as members of a
Joint Jordanian-Palestinian
delegation in future negotiations
with the U.S. and Israel.
Israel has no objections to a
joint delegation, provided that the
Palestinians on it are not mem-
bers of the Palestine Liberation
Organization. But Israel balks at
the idea, proposed by Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak, that
the joint delegation talk first to
Reagan Administration officials.
West Bank sources said that
Murphy presented a list of poten-
tial Palestinian negotiators to
Jordanian and PLO officials in
Amman and that the list was
under study at a meeting of the
PLO executive committee now
taking place in Baghdad. The
names correspond to those men-
tioned on Kuwait television over
the weekend.
They are: Mayor Elias Freij, of
Bethlehem, a leading Palestinian
moderate who has long preached
peaceful co-existence between Is-
rael and the Palestinians; the de-
posed former Mayo'r of Gaza,
Rashad A-Shawa; three Palesti-
nian academicians currently liv-
ing in the U.S. where they teach
at prestigious universities —
Profs. Edward Said, Hisham
Sharabi and Walid Khalidi; Hik-
mat el-Masri of Nablus, a former
deputy speaker of the Jordanian
parliament; and Nabil Shath, who
presently lives in Egypt.
Youths Charged
In Vandalism
New York (JTA) — Three Long
Island youths have been charged
with burglary and criminal mis-
chief in last week's vandalism of
the North Shore Hebrew
Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
Police estimated the damage at
more than $100,000.
The three youths, who were not
identified by police because they
are minors, are allegedly respon-
sible for the destruction of hun-
dreds of books, computers, two
pianos and audio visual equip-
ment. Windows were also broken,
desks were overturned and paint
poured on the floors.
Some 300 parents and students
joined together Sunday to clean
up the debris. The academy is a
private school of 25.0 students
through the eighth grade. The
school was closed for Passover
when the vandalism occurred.
