BY CARL ALPERT
Special to The Jewish News

Haifa — When Isaak Berman of
Jerusalem quietly bought up
thousands of meters of black, red,
white and green cloth, he almost
created a national crisis. Tongues
began to wag, foreign press corre-
spondents were alerted and the
authorities launched a discreet
inquiry.
Berman is the largest manufac-
turer of flags in this part of the
world, let alone Israel, and the
colors on which he was stocking
up are the colors of the national
flag of the Royal Hashemite
Kingdom of Jordan. Did this
mean that he had inside informa-
tion about a projected visit to Is-
rael by King Hussein?
When word was flashed in 1977,
only three days before the visit of
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat,
the Israel Foreign Ministry asked
Berman if he could, on such short
notice, produce a quantity of
Egyptian flags to assure a warm
and colorful welcome. Replied Be-
rman then, "I have 1,200 flags all
ready for immediate delivery." he
had read the signs and had fol-
lowed his hunches. •
Berman feels the same way to-
day, and at some time within the
next six months he will be ready,
on demand, to make instant de-
livery of thousands of Jordanian
flags to assure the Jordanian
monarch a warm welcome.
Berman's flag business was
founded by his Polish-born father,
Kalman, in 1945, based on mother
Berman's skill at embroidery. The
Australian soldiers on duty in
Palestine wanted decorative mili-
tary patches? — she produced
them. Next came embroidered
dresses and even curtains for the
holy ark in the synagogue. Then
the British ordered flags, where-
upon the Haganah and the Etzel
followed suit.
• The creation of the state in 1948
resulted in an immediate and
huge demand. Tailors and
seamstresses and little dress
shops in every corner of the coun-
try began to produce Israel flags of
every size and in a wide spectrum
of blues, azures, ultramarines,
turquoise and indigo. Berman
fixed rigid criteria for uniform
color and size, and the order went
out from no less than David Ben-
Gurion to establish Berman's cre-
ations as the national standard.
Today the firm has little competi-
tion.
Kalman Berman passed away,
and his son, Isaak, became gen-
eral manager of the firm. The
horizons were broadened. When
the heads of four African states
visited Israel, they were im
pressed with the quality of their
own national flags on display, and
asked if they could have them.
They were sent as a gift from the
Foreign Ministry.
Orders now come in from all
parts of the world. The bright and
colorful flags flying in several
Arab states may not bear the label
"Made in Israel," but they come
from Berman's workshops
through overseas agents. At the
famous Khartoum Arab Confer-
ence in 1967, Israel-made flags
