Haifa — Perhaps the most un-
usual vacation resort in Israel is
not open to tourists, nor can every
Israeli register as a guest. Only
Jews who came through the
Holocaust, and are unable to af-
ford a first class vacation, may
come here, for there is no charge
whatsoever. Since large numbers
of Nazi victims from Eastern
Europe never qualified for re-
stitution from Germany, there is
no lack of needy survivors.
The resort, located on the
seashore in the northern town of
Shavei Zion, is financed and oper-
ated entirely by a group of dedi-
cated German Christians who re-
gard this as a labor of love, a small
compensation for the crimes
committed by the Nazis against
the Jews. "In this way we hope to
apply soothing balm on still fes-
tering wounds," they say. In Ger-
many the organization is known
as Liebeswerk Israel.
Throughout the year, 46 guests,
all Holocaust survivors, are ac-
cepted for successive two-week
periods, without any cost to them.
The buildings and the comforta-
ble facilities were all contributed
by German Christians. The
attending staff, kitchen, mainte-
nance, etc., are all volunteers
from Germany, 15 in number,
who serve for a year — not to
atone for Germany's sins, they say
but to express their own spiritual
relationship to the people who
gaVe Christians their religion,
their Bible, and then were treated
so cruelly.
The resort, known as Beth El, is
not easy to find. There are no

large signs. The group is not in-
terested in publicity. Hundreds of
thousands of dollars have obvi-
ously been put into the physical
facilities, yet nowhere is there a
single plaque crediting a gener-
ous donor. The legend conspicu-
ously displayed in Hebrew and
German in the dining hall is a
quotation from Isaiah: "Comfort
ye, comfort ye, my people, saith
your God."
Hans Bayer, 45, director of Beth
El, said the season opens each
year with two groups of German
Christians, friends and con-
tributors to the movement. They
spend one week at Beth El and
