Drivers Face
A Swift Kick

BY ELANA EIZAK KUPERSTEIN

Special to The Jewish News

It may be called a "boot" in De-
nver, but it's been renamed a
"sandal" in Israel, to match the
climate and the informal dress
code. The "sandal" is a bright red
imitation of an American device
designed to lock the tires of illeg-
ally parked cars. The sight of the
"sandal" on their car wheels turns
the faces of Jerusalem car owners
bright red, and along come com-
plaints, curses and a few more vio-
lent reactions against the instal-
lers and police officers.
The complicated, expensive,
and time consuming process re-
quired to rid cars of their new
footware will either reduce the
number of illegally parked cars on
Jerusalem sidewalks, or start a
(street) war.
An Israeli is making tennis
headlines in Florida and Puerto
Rico. Dalia Coriat first won the
Citrus Bowl in Florida, and later
the Coqui Bowl in San Juan in
both singles and doubles, quite a
winning streak for a 15-year-old
tennis star.
In Israel, consumers thought
they were winning in price games
in January as they emptied stores
of all appliances, anticipating the
end of the price freeze. Nobody
knew yet how high prices would
go with the new economic "pack-
age," but customers were leaving
stores with armfuls of packages,
just to make sure.
Empty supermarket shelves
provided evidence of panic buying
of coffee. There were no more dis-
hwashers to be bought in all of
Israel until April and many stores
ran out of television sets, re-
frigerators and video recorders.
Some even lost their floor samples
in the mad buying rush.
The Rothschilds will also be
spending money in Israel, and
this time they'll provide all the
funds for the construction of a new
Supreme Court building near the
Knesset. The generosity of the
Rothschild Foundation (Yad
Hanadiv) has also given Israel its
unique Knesset building.
This summer, a $3 million cable
car project will start operating in
Haifa. The modern design of the
station on top of Mt. Carmel is a
perfect compliment to the archi-
tecture of nature, and will allow
tourists to see one of Israel's most
beautiful cities from a new
- perspective.

IDF Searches
Shiite Village

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Shiite
village of Shehur, about 18
kilometers east of Tyre, was
searched by the Israel Defense
Force on Wednesday for terrorists
and weapons.
According to sources of the
United Nations Interim Force in
Lebanon (UNIFIL), 150 of the vil-
lage's male population were or-
dered to assemble on the soccer
field for interrogation. At the
same time, soldiers searched their
homes where their wives and
children were confined, the UN-
IFIL sources said.
