THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
GREAT LOBSTER 01' PRIME RIB
& STEAK r4f#
OF BEEF
DANNY RASKIN
movie takes on still more of a local
flavor . . . as Nate and Esther
Willis write from Boca Raton, Fla.
that their daughter, Allee Willis,
Mumford graduate, wrote two
songs in the box office hit with
Eddie Murphy.
"Neutron Dance" sung by the
Pointer Sisters, was film's theme
song, and is now charted in the top
ten . . . "Stir It Up" is sung by
Patti LaBelle.
Allee has written hundreds of
songs which have been recorded
by numerous artists . . . Her
biggest hit, "Boogie Wonderland,"
sung by Earth, Wind and Fire and
The Emotions, sold 13 million re-
cords.
Living in Detroit, Allee was
with Columbia Records in 1972,
writing ads and radio commer-
cials . . . when she started pen-
ning her own music . . . bought a
tape recorder and piano to begin
composing seriously . . . In 1974,
Columbia brought out an album,
"Childstar" on Epic, with Allee
singing her own songs. She quit
trying to sing and concentrated on
songwriting . . . Within the first
year, she had 60 songs recorded
. . . three that went gold (Earth,
Wind and Fire's "Boogie Wonder-
land" and "September" plus
Maxine Nightengale's "Lead Me
On") . . . Over - the years she has
written all types of songs with
lightning speed, getting at least
100 a year recorded . . . and sell-
ing over 21 million records.
But Allee's success in music
isn't her only claim to fame .. .
The atomic '50s collection she
started in 1969 . . . clothes, furni-
ture, cars, memorabilia,
appliances, etc. became one of the
most famous collections of its type
. . . featured in
Vogue,
Mademoiselle and Interview mag-
azines . . . plus European press
and television programs like the
"Today Show."
And still this isn't all Allee can
do . . . One night in 1983, she
stayed up the entire evening glu-
ing knobs and dials collected•from
the '50s onto a huge piece of paper
where Allee had thrown some
paint . . . Next day someone
walked into her house and bought
it for $1,200 . . . Now, over a year
later, she has sold over 50 pieces of
art . . . is designing and making
furniture . . . and has work fea-
tured in Vogue, Metropolitan
Home, Art & Auction and Casa
Vogue . Many of her works are
at some of the more prominent art
galleries in Los Angeles.
Allee has become noted for her
motorized art, too . . . featuring
media figures and objects moving
to songs she wrote . . . Her "Neut-
ron Dance," a 5' x 4" x 7" construc-
tion with 37 moving parts . . . and
"Boogie Wonderland," a 7' x 8'
_piece with 42 moving parts and
lights, are currently displayed
along Los Angeles' Melrose Ave-
nue.
And still more Allee talent .. .
With two friends, she has also
written, directed and produced a
feature length, home video com-
edy called "They Must Be Told"
. . . starring Linda Ronstadt, Teri
Garr, Buck Henry, Karen Black,
Lesley Ann Warren, Toni Basil,
Bud Cort, Lauren Wood, Pee Wee
.
