The black community is too
well endowed with qualified
political leaders who do not
trade in bigotry and racial
politics for the Democratic
Party to succumb ever again to
such unprincipled behavior.
The Democratic leadership
cannot count on a Republican
candidate's renewed embrace
of the Moral Majority to assure
Jewish support for the Demo-
cratic Party. And since the
current compassionless poli-
tics of greed will hopefully not
permanently characterize the
Republican Party, Democrats
cannot even count on auto-
matic black support in the fu-
ture.
That uncertainty may well
be invigorating for our two-
party system.

The Knesset Member who fur-
nished the definition of "jerk" for
your Purim Pranks (March 8) was
seriously misquoted. The pro-
posed "Who is a Jerk" legislation
offered four definitions:
Abba Eban — Former official
who urged United States to put
more pressure on his own country,
Israel, to yield to Arab demands.
Syn. traitor.
Yitzhok Navon — President of
Israel. Refused to meet with
Knesset Members he claimed
were racist and anti-democratic,
yet met with Communist, Arab,
and PLO MKs to discuss govern-
ment policy. Syn. hypocrite.

We were gratified to see that
the congregations listing has been
partially restored to The Jewish
News. However, we sincerely be-
lieve that the effectiveness of con-
gregational announcements is
seriously impaired by appearing
only once a month. People cannot
be expected to retain a copy of the
paper throughout that period to
check on Shabbat or holiday serv-
ices.
We would greatly urge the re-
sumption of the weekly column.

Your lengthy article on Mr.
Leon Charney (Feb. 22) starts
with the words:
"Leon Charney quotes the
Torah when asked if his new book,
Special Counsel, might be consid-
ered as self-serving: 'Strangers
should praise you, but if not, then
your own mouth.' "
I would appreciate very much if
you would enlighten me where I
can find this quotation in the To-
rah. On the other hand, if it turns
out to be a misplaced and mislead-
ingly twisted-around quotation,
would you please apologize to
your readers who are still proud of
the moral teachings of our Jewish
heritage.
I wonder what did Mr. Charney
study at Yeshiva University?

is a welcome phenomenon, or
even black support for Jesse
Jackson in the 1984 primaries.
As the election returns indi-
cated, Jews understood that it
was not Jackson's views on the
issues, but his symbolic role as
the carrier of black aspira-
tions, that galvanized his sup-
port in the black community.
It is not that blacks are insen-
sitive to anti-Semitism, but
that they felt this issue — like
so many others on which they
disagreed with him — was
dwarfed by the importance of
what Jackson's candidacy
meant to them.
But that understanding
does not constitute license for
the black community or the
Democratic Party to tolerate
anti-Semitism in its midst.
