Adults To Mark
B'nai Mitzvah

When Edwin Sallen becomes
bar mitzvah at Temple Emanu-El
on March 15 at 8:15 p.m., it will
represent the fulfillment of a
promise to learn more about
Judaism, which he made to him-
self at this season 40 years ago.
He will be joined by Renee
Eisenberg, Barbara Kellerman,
Marianne Kestenbaum, Michael
Subia and Shonnette Weisman,
who also will become b'nai/13'not
mitzvah.
Just before Pesach, near the
end of World War II, Sallen's com-
pany liberated the town of Char-
leroi, Belgium. His commander
told him a desecrated church in
the city needed some work. It
turned out to be the Charleroi
Synagogue.
Sallen attended Pesach services
at the synagogue. But he under-
stood neither the Hebrew nor the
customs and rituals of the tradi-
tional congregation. He promised
himself that someday he would.
The six members of the group
have completed two years of
classes in the Temple Emanu-El
Academy for Adults and seven
months of study with Rabbi Lane
Steinger, in preparation for the
service.
An Oneg Shabbat sponsored by
the Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood
will follow the service.

Gregory Newman
Twins Ceremony

Gregory Seth Newman will
share his bat mitzvah with a
Soviet Jewish boy in absentia at
Cong. Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses on March 30.
The son of Dr. and Mrs. Howard
S. Newman of West Bloomfield,
Gregory will share his special day
with Artur Finkelstein, whose
family has been denied exit visas
from Russia since June 1972.
Artur is the son of Salomon and
Frida Finkelstein. The Finkels-
tein family was refused permis-
sion to emigrate to Israel to join
Finkelstein's parents in June
1972.
Finkelstein was in the army
from 1968 to 1970 and is a car-
penter, technician/mechanic. Ar-
tur's mother is a nurse/lab techni-
cian.
