Our attitude is that where
there is no Halachic issue,
there is no argument against
women participating," Rabbi
Rosenbaum said. "Where
there are traditional distinc-
tions made we try to be care-
ful."
While the Reform and Re-
constructionist movements
have been ordaining women
rabbis for more than a decade,
the issue has prompted a hot
debate among Conservative
Jews. Spiritual leaders like
Rabbi Arm see last week's vote
as a sign that Conservative
Judaism is slowly drifting
toward the Reform end of the
spectrum.
Proponents of the amend-
ment believe the effect will be
just the opposite. "It may help
prevent further erosion in the
Conservative movement,"
• Rabbi Gamze said. "Hopefully,
the acceptance of female rab-
bis will stop women from leav-
ing the Conservative branch
and joining the ranks of Re-
form Jews."
In New York, supporters of
• ordination for women said
• that the amendment proce-
dure was used to avoid a fight
over the issue at next month's
annual convention. At the last
two gatherings, the admission
1 - of a female rabbi fell short of
the three-quarter majority
needed in a floor vote. The
Rabbi in question was Beverly
Magidson, a former Detroiter
and graduate of the Reform
seminary who serves a Con-
servative congregation out-
side of Albany, N.Y. as an
assistant rabbi.
The mail ballot, which
showed 70 percent of those vot-
ing in favor of the change, was
sufficient to pass the amend-
ment but not enough to admit
women on the convention
floor. Female rabbis not or-
dained by the Conservative
seminary, such as Rabbi
Magidson, will still require
the 75 percent vote at the con-
vention for admission.
