THE WrZARD. '&"

engaged in a profound question on
how a person grows, whether from
the feet up, or from the head
down? Said the first: "From the
feet up, of course. Last year, I
bought my son a new suit for his
bar mitzvah and the pants were
just the right length. Now, the
pants baely reach his ankles. This
proves that people grow from the
feet up."
"Fool," snapped the second, "it's
obvious that people grew from the
head down. If you see a group of
soldiers marching, all their feet
are on the same level. But if you
look at their heads, you will see
that they are at different heights.
This proves that people grow from
the head down."
Both Chelmites were wrong.
We grow neither from the bottom
up, nor the top down. We grow
from the inside out. And the
measure of our growth is our
readiness to go out to our brothers
and become aware of their bur-
dens:However, such growth is dif-
ficult. We are born selfish. For the
infant, the whole world exists for
only one purpose - to minister to
its needs. Growing up is the slow,
painful process of learning that
we are here not only to be fed, but
to feed; not only to be cared for,
but to care for others; not only to
be indulged, but to serve.
But it is easier not to notice, for
seeing brothers gives them a
claim on us. The story is told of a
man who pulled down the window
shades as his train passed the
dingy houses of a coal mining
town. "I don't like to see much
misery," he exclaimed. His com-
panion reached over and raised
the shade. "You will never do any-
thing to relieve such misery until
you are first honest enough to look
at it."
Like Moses, we are called upon
to go out to our brothers and sis-
ters in the land of Israel and in all
the lands of their dispersion and
to see their burdens. The Soviet
Union is persecuting Hebrew
teachers in Moscow and Lenin-
grad, while hundreds of re-
fuseniks are languishing in jails
or labor camps on trumped up,
unproven charges. We need to be
their voice and protest these
many and constant acts of injus-
tice.
Ethiopian Jews, who have lived
under conditions of unspeakable
misery and degradation for years,
are now finding their way to free-
dom. A valiant and effective re-
scue operation is being under=
taken by Israel. Thousands of
Ethiopian Jews can now be re-
deemed from the refugee camps of
Sudan and be restored to life, dig-
nity and opportunity in the land of
their ancestors. American Jews
are challenged to look beyond the
circle of their privilege and secu-
rity and see the burdens of their
most desperate brethren and
lighten those burdens.
The strength of the Jewish
people flows from the sense of
mutual responsibility that has
characterized them through the
ages. Each of us knows that our
survival depends on our readiness
to carry our brothers with the ex-
pectation that should we ever
need it, some of our brothers will
step forward to carry us.
