"Opposition to the concept and
practices of apartheid has been
repeatedly voiced in Israel and
the American Jewish commu-
nity," said Alvin Kushner last
week at a rally in front of the
McNamara federal office building
downtown.
"Apartheid, the foundation
upon which South Africa's gov-
ernment and society is structured,
strictly enforces the separation of
people based solely upon dif-
ferences of race and color, and
formally institutionalizes racism
in that country. Dissent is se-
verely curtailed, families are
forced to live apart, persons of
color are subjected to economic
hardships, social ostracism and
peronal humiliation," said Kush-
ner, executive director of the
Jewish Community Council.
"The support of the Jewish
people for the struggle against ra-
cism stems not only from a deep-
rooted abhorrence of discrimina-
tion based on race, color or creed,
but also from the fact that for so
long Jews themselves have been
the victims of racial hatred. We
take particular note of, and pride
in, the long-held and oft-repeated
opposition to apartheid expressed
by the government of the Jewish
state of Israel. We realize that the
battle for individual freedom and
respect is a universal fight;
human misery and oppression
anywhere diminish all people and
commands our attention. In keep-
ing with our own traditional
Jewish commitment to human
justice and dignity, we in the
Jewish community deplore and
protest the practice of apartheid
and urge the United States gov-
ernment to use its full influence
with South Africa to terminate
that offensive system.
"It is most fitting from a Jewish
perspective that we gather today,
during the holiday of Chanukah,
which marks the first historical
commemoration of a people's fight
for freedom.
"As a Jew, I am proud and hon-
ored to stand here before you, with
my colleagues, in solidarity
against apartheid."
The Free South Africa Move-
ment rally was repeated in many
cities across the United States.

In New York, more than 20
members of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith demon-
strated across from the South Af-
rican Consulate on Park Avenue.
Among the demonstrators were
Kenneth Bialkin, the ADL's na- •
tional chairman; Nathan
Perlmutter, national director;
Abraham Foxman, associate na-
tional director; and Gary Zaslab,
cht-drman of the ADL's New York
Regional Board. .The demon-
strators carried signs reading
"Freedom and Human Dignity
End Apartheid Now" and "Apar-
theid Denies Liberty."
The vigil and demonstration
began with the lighting of three
candles on a large menorah,
marking the second day of
Chanukah. In a written state-
ment issued at the demonstration,
Bialkin and Perlmutter said:
"No government can in truth
call itself free and democratic
while at the same time denying
millions of its citizens the basic
freedoms of a democracy. Yet, this
is the condition that exists today
in South Africa where black citi-
zens are not accorded the rights
which we who live in democratic
societies take for granted.
"We call on the Pretoria gov-
ernment to immediately begin the
implementation of substantive,
rather than cosmetic, changes
that will see its system of racial
separation dismantled. We are
under no illusions about this
being an organized process, but
the transition toward a change in
which all South Africans will
have a voice in their country's
internal and external affairs
should begin in earnest."
On Christmas, the American
Jewish Committee sponsored an
afternoon vigil at the consulate to
allow apartheid protestors who
are Christian a day away from the
continuing protest.
Last week, Benjamin Hooks,
president of the National Associa-
tion for the Advancement of
Colored People, and Rabbi Ale-
xander Schindler, president of the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations, issued a joint state-
ment condemning apartheid in
South Africa and the persecution
of Jews in the Soviet Union.
