CALL THE ROTT BROS. Marty, Cy or Shel
-
This community received the
nicest Chanukah present Dec. 16
- at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue
and I'm so glad that I and my fam-
- ily were able to be there along
with so many others in the corn-
- munity.
- The Laker family could not
L; have chosen a better means of
benefitting the community than
in that concert presentation
called "The Joy of Chanukah."
- From the clear resonant tones
of Cantor Chaim Najman through
- the lovely voices of the Shaarey
Zedek adult choir to the sweet
- voices of the children's choir, this
concert was truly a joy .. .
Thanks and a salute of the yar-
mulke to the Laker family and all
` who were involved in this lovely
gift to the community.

The issue of nativity scenes on
public property and with public
I funding has become an issue for
raany people. We applaud the dis-
cussion because it calls into ques-
Lion the role of government and
religion. Hopefully the issue has
- widened sensitivities on both
_sides of the issue.
- We condemn the threats issued
to those who challenged the use of
tax dollars and government prop-
erty to display the nativity scene.
Such threats of violence should
have no place in America.
It is important to remember
that while Christmas is a legal
holiday, it is a religious holiday
because it celebrates the birth of
Jesus (who many believe was
God).
In our rush to defend our beliefs
and symbols that stand for those
I beliefs we should be sensitive to
- he fact that other religions see
Jesus as a prophet, and others as a
•pod man. Whether we believe in
any of these explanations we
should be sensitive to the beliefs
of others.

Holland street
to be renamed
Amsterdam (JTA) — A street in
the town of Hengelo in eastern
Holland will get a new name as a
- result of the initiative of Vienna-
based Nazi-hunter Simon Wie-
, senthal. The street was named ten
years ago in honor of the late
Kuno Stierlingwill, a German-
, born organist who conducted the
- choir in Hengelo before World
War II.
Wiesenthal called the attention
of the local authorities to the fact
2 that Stierlingwill joined the Nazi
party in 1938 in Westphalia and
- later became a member of the SA.
A portrait of Stierlingwill which
his relatives presented to Hengelo
after his death in 1967 has been
returned to the family.
