New York (JTA) — Israel MK
Avraham Werdyger, leader of the
Agudath Israel Party, said
last week that he would recom-
mend that his party quit the gov-
ernment coalition if the Knesset
rejects the amendment to the Law
of Return.
The amendment requires that
all conversions to Judaism be
conducted according to halachah.
The amendment is expected to be
voted on this month. Werdyger
was in New York last week for the
annual dinner of the Poale
Agudath Israel of America.

New York (JTA) — An an-
-nonymous European collector last
week paid a reported $825,000 for
a richly illuminated complete
Bible that was transcribed in
1312 by Shem Tov ben-Abraham,
a Maimonides scholar. The rare
Bible was sold during an auction
of Judaica at Sotheby's.
The Bible was part of 97 manu-
scripts that went on sale from the
collection of David Solomon Sas-
soon, a Bombay-born British col-
lector. Sasson collected 1,300 vol-
umes of Judaica from age 18 until
his death at 60 in 1942.
