Kalahnikov assault rifles, a favo-
rite weapon of the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization and other
terrorist groups, large numbers of
which were captured during the
war in Lebanon. Other weapons
turned in included large calibre
artillery shells, Uzi submachine-
guns, hand submachineguns,
hand grenades and thousands of
army-issue sleeping bags and
quilted jackets.

Likud losing
- ground: poll

Tel Aviv (JTA) — If elections
were held today, Likud would lose
13 percent of its seats to the Labor
Party, most of the smaller parties
would retain their present repre-
sentation in the Knesset and
Rabbi Meir Kahane's extremist
Kach faction would increase its
strength from one to three Knes-
set mandates, according to a pub-
lic opinion poll published in
Maariv last week.
The poll found that Likud
would lose seven of the 41 seats it
won in the elections last July 23
for a new total of 34 seats. Labor
would increase its strength from
40 to 52 seats, largely at the ex-
pense of Likud, the poll revealed.

Sharon sees
high-tech gains

New York (JTA) — Israel
Minister of Trade and Industry
Ariel Sharon predicted here at an
Israel Bond dinner that, within
the next decade, Israel may be-
come the "third most important
nation in the world," following the
United States and Japan, in the
production of sophisticated high
technology products.
"With a united government in
Jerusalem, and the help of Jews
and other friends throughout the
world," he said, "we have a unique
opportunity to develop Israel into
a high technology nation." The
key to achieving this goal, he
indicated, is foreign investment
in Israel's future development.

Group issues
apology for ad

Columbus, Ohio (JTA) — The
American Association of Teachers
of German (AATG) has publicly
apologized for an advertisement
for an anti-Semitic book which it
says was "inadvertently ac-
cepted" for publication in the
Winter 1984 edition of its periodi-
cal, The German Quarterly.
The AATG Executive Council
meeting in Chicago on Nov. 16,
unanimously adopted a resolution
tightening procedures for accept-
ing advertisements for the Quar-
terly and declaring that it
"categorically repudiates and
condemns the dissemination of
material that is anti-Semitic or
that can be construed as an apol-
ogy for Nazism."
