role as "superboss," pointing
to a generous royalty plan for
both writers and artists. "I
have been on the other side at
Dynamite," she recalls.
She also has learned how
serious a role comic characters
play in society, "Our comic
books are morality tales," she
says. In a world low on
heroes, they survive. They're
part of our mythology — like
Greek gods. When you see a
Superman movie, there's this
sense of exhilaration — our
hearts go out to him."
Kahn's heart went out to
Christopher Reeve, who por-
trayed the Man of Steel with a
heart of gold on the screen. "I
loved the first two 'Superman'
movies," she says. "Christ-
opher Reeve has a firm under-
standing of the character. His
inerpretation is haw we see
Superman."
Kahn looks forward to the
"Batman" movie, scheduled
for 1986. She is not nearly as
enthusiastic about the popular
"Batman" television series,
aired during the '60s and re-
peated now in syndication.
"That show is not held in high
esteem here," she says.
Kahn's own heroes aren't
limited to two-dimensional
personalities. Her real life
idols are people such as Gloria
Steinem and Katherine
Graham, publisher of the
Washington Post.
They, like the larger-than-
life characters who people
comic books, reach for the
stars. "Comics give readers
the gift of fantasy,"Kahn says.
They enable us to dream, to
realize our own lives. Super-
man, Wonder Woman and
Batman have transcended the
decades; they reach out to
people of all time. They have
eternal appeal."
Kahn admits there is very
much the kid in her adult view
of life. "As the youngest in my
family, I was never permitted
to babysit for others," she says.
-"I had never held a baby. Sud-
denly when I started putting
out children's magazines, I
was surrounded by these truly
vulnerable kids who would
hang over their seats to hear
me speak."

Kahn maintains friendships
with some of those early fans.
One of them became a pub-
lished novelist." She's talking
about Meg Wolitzer, whose
book Sleepwalking, proved a
popular attraction.
"Do you know what she told
me? She said that when she
was 11, she had this fantasy
that someday, she'd be able to
