Detroit Section's next general meeting.

Greater Detroit Section, Na-
tional Council of Jewish Women,
will bestow the national organiza-
tion's Hannah G. Solomon Award
on Dorothy. Kaufman and Freddy
Shiffman at the section's next
general meeting at 7:30 p.m. Nov.
29 at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The public is invited free of
charge.
The women will receive the
award for their outstanding con-
tribution to society" in co-
chairing a committee to publish
the Greater Detroit Access Guide,
a directory of surveyed sites de-
scribing accessibility features for
handicappers and the infirm.
Mesdames Kaufman and
Shiffman have already received
the Kenny Michigan Rehabilita-
tion Association Award "for dis-
tinguished service to the dis-
abled."
Guest speaker at the meeting
will be former New York Con-
gresswoman Bella Abzug.
A lawyer for more than 30 years
and a member of the United
States Congress for six years,
Abzug was the first woman in his-
tory to run for the United States
Senate from New York state and
for mayor of New York City. In
1977, President Carter named her
presiding officer of the National
Commission for the Observance of
Internationl Women's Year.
Later she served as co-chairman
of the President's National Advi-
sory Committee for Women.
A founder of the Nation -al
Women's Political Caucus and a
member of NOW and other
women's organizations, Abzug,
while in Congress, wrote the first
law banning discrimination in ob-
taining credit, loans, and
mortgages; fought for the title XI
Equal Opportunity in Education
laws, and introduced many other
bills to improve the status of
women.

working to reach out to grass roots

National NCJW
wins U.S. grant

New York — The National
Council of Jewish Women has re-
ceived an unsolicited federal
grant from the Department of
Health and Human Services for
further implementation of its
Court Appointed Special Advo-
cate (CASA) project. The grant,
totalling $83,892, will be funded
through the Office of Human De-
velopment Services (OHDS).
CASA is a program in which
trained volunteers are appointed
by judges to be independent advo-
cates for children in the foster
care system. Currently, NCJW
maintains 15 CASA sites in the
United States, including Detroit.
NCJW also has received the
1984 AVA National Service
Award for its State Public Affairs
Network (SPAN) from the Asso-
ciation for Volunteer Administra-
tion. The award is given annually
to a national organization for its
efforts in the field of volun-
teerism.
