THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Focus
on
America's
Future

each emerging in the glamorous
Nipon designs.
His fur creations were an im-
pressive adendum.
"This is her night!" Tamara
Friedman said as the audience
stood in applause when Betty
Gerisch introduced Leah Marks
. . . Indeed it was.
THERE'LL SOON BE a new
interior and exterior look at To-
pinka's Country House, Tele-
graph and W. Seven Mile Rd. . . .
closed for remodeling.
SIXTH OWNERSHIP takes
over restaurant at New Orleans
Mall . . . where Greenfield and 10
Mile site was originally named
Dubbs . . . It's now Food by Julie
. . . She is wife of George George
. . . honest, that's his name.
THE SAGA OF - L. J.
Loophole's and how the monicker
was concocted will become history
when a name change brings back
the Sheraton-Southfield fine din-
ing room into a class act it once
enjoyed . . . That was quite a while
back when Marie Roumell ran the
Au Sable Room for Gershenson-
, owned Shiawasee Hotel.
Decor, too, will be changed . . .
in a complete renewal including
totally reworked menu . . . The
140 seating at tables and booths is
a whole lot better than ever be-
fore, thanks to the four-month job
of Food and Beverage Director
Chuck DeSantis, one of the tops in
his field . . . Chuck's training pro-
gram is a highly knowledgeable
one . . . and don't think the help
are not appreciative . . . The bet-
ter they are means more custom-
ers . . . and more customers means
more tips ... He even shows the
waitresses how to carry trays,
which side to serve from, to al-
ways wear a smile, etc. . . . From
the time Chuck took over, only
two of the seven waitresses were
retained . . . The others are new
. . . Chuck even went out and got
Sheraton-Southfield a knowl-
edgeable executive chef . . . Pat-
rick O'Connor . . . who came here
directly from the Lansdowne.
At lunch recently, one of the
new gals, Sally Popa, was splen-
did . . . smiling, courteous and
thoroughly capable as she waited
on us with efficient pleasantness
. . . Try the Steak Salad . . . It's a
Caesar Salad with slices of steak
. . . or on the lighter side . . . the
Tomato Rosette with deliciously
prepared white meat tuna . . . And
don't say tuna is tuna . . . Just a
little thing like too much or not
enough mayonnaise can make so
much difference . . . Soup of the
day was Chicken Noodle .. .
which is homemade along with all
other soups.
Leslee Thomas, catering direc-
tor at Sheraton-Southfield, is
three months from Westin Hotel
downtown Detroit . . . and Perry
Shaikh still does his very capable
job as general manager.
A lot of changes going on at
Sheraton-Southfield . . . Yester-
day's Classic Oldies will be com-
pletely renovated . . . outside has
been relighted . . . 2 a.m. and it
looks like daylight.
The 10-year-old, 400-room
Sheraton-Southfield Hotel is un-
dergoing a three phase, $3 million
renovation . . . It began in De-
cember of last year and has re-

suited in positive results of in-
creased business and improved
staff morale . . . Employees say
they're proud of their "new" hotel
and enjoy working in the up-
graded environment . . . including
refurbishing of 243 rooms.
Phase three, which will begin
sometime early in 1985, includes
gutting the current L.J.
Loophole's restaurant with its
Little Bar, plus Yesterday's
Classic Oldies Club.
L.J. Loophole's . . . How could
anybody in their right mind con-
jure a name like that? . . . And
even more amazing, the ridicul-
ous "summons" that used to corn-
prise its menu . . . The stranger-
than-fiction story about how L.J.
Loophole's was born is wierd fan-
tasy . . . Imagine naming a res-
taurant after a character who
finished his days on earth dangl-
ing from the end of a rope?
ALTHOUGH HALLOWEEN
is considered a pagan holiday, it
has become somewhat of a tradi-
tional funster rather than a cele-
bration for any particular thing
. . . In fact, very very few people
even know why there is such an
occasion . . . Some of the things
going about this Wednesday
night:
Troy Hilton, Crooks Rd., in con-
junction with WCLS, has party 7
p.m. and famous person look-alike
contest to benefit Capuchin Soup
Kitchen . . . Personality judges
will award prizes to person who
looks and acts most like chosen
star . . . apple bobbing, tarot card
reading or palm reading, etc.
