Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's two
Chief Rabbis appear to be extend-
ing an olive branch to Reform
Judaism. "Reform Jews are Jews,
just like us," Rabbis Avraham
Shapira and Mordechai Eliahu
said last week in Jerusalem in a
joint interview with representa-
tives of the overseas Jewish
media.
The Ashkenazic and Sephardic
Chief Rabbis denied that they, in .
any way, "fail to recognize" the
Jewishness of Reform Jews. This
represents a major departure
from the position held by many
Orthodox Jews here and abroad.
The two Chief Rabbis also con-
tended that the controversial
"Who is a Jew?" issue is "wrongly ,
portrayed" as one of "recognition
or non-recognition" of other Jews.
The fact is, said Shapira, the only
issue at stake is the conversion
procedure practiced by Reform
rabbis.
"We do not interfere or com-
ment on these rabbis' activities in
any other areas. But in the matter
of conversion, Jewry is like a club.
You cannot join unless all the rest
of the membership agrees to the
terms of your joining," Shapira -
said.
Eliahu said he considered the
demand for pluralism in conver-
sion as a contravention of the
spirit d unity. He likened that
spirit to the one which motivated
the creation of a national unity
government and stressed that it
required further strengthening in
face of troubled times.
Casablanca (JTA) — The
Moroccan version of America's
Fourth of July' took place last
March 3 throughout the length
and breadth of this colorful and
fascinating Moslem nation, and
almost the entire Jewish popula
tion of close to 20,000 turned out
en masse to celebrate the 23rd
anniversary of their King's ascen-
sion to the throne.
In each of the major cities, in-
cluding Casablanca, Tangiers,
Fez, Marrakesh, and Rabat, the
Jewish community renewed itIN (
pledge of loyalty and support for
King Hassan II at huge parties
and dinners.
During the elaborate reception
in the King's palace in Casab-
lanca, the monarch affectionately
welcomed a Jewish contingent led
by the Grand Rabbi and David
Amar, the distinguished head of
Moroccan Jewry. Scores of gov-
ernment officials, including the
governor of each province, were
on hand to demonstrate their kin-
ship with the Jewish community.
To quote one of the Mosier.,
leaders, the president of the
Municipal Council of Marrakesh:
"There's never been any real dif-
ference in Morocco between the
Mussulman and Jew. Let us in-
spire in our children and
grandchildren the same spirit of
amity that brings us here to 'I
night." And the presidents of each
Jewish community seemed to L'
