endorse this public avowal of
friendship.
In an interview in Casablanca,
Amar, the country's foremost
Jewish leader, insisted that the
rights of all faiths must be vigor-
ously maintained, not only in
Morocco but in Israel as well.
In Israel, he said, "the govern-
ment has the duty to understand
and to enforce the rights of the
Palestinians within its borders.
Such a policy is in accord with Bi-
blical precepts. Just as Israel's
boundaries and its right to exist
must be respected, so much the
Palestinians be afforded the
' opportunity to live in peace and
dignity."
Amar considers the Jews of
Morocco to be "Moroccans, first
and foremost." He feels that "the
response of Jewry on March 3rd
was to confirm our allegiance to
_ our King." He revealed that he
had telephoned, a few weeks ear-
lier, some prominent American
Jewish officials and told them
that there had been "absolutely
no change in the King's high re-
gard for his Jewish subjects, de-
spite any published reports imply-
ing the contrary."

French Jews show
concern over new
right wing party

Paris (JTA) — There is serious
concern over the growing popular-
city of Jean-Marie Le Pen and his
extreme right-wing National
Front Party, but the French
Jewish community must ap-
proach this phenomenon cau-
> tiously according to Theo Klein,
president of the Representative
Council of French Jewish Institu-
tions (CRIF).
"We have no sympathy with Le
Pen's policies but we refrain from
intervening constantly against
him for one reason, good or bad:
By heading the opposition against
Le Pen, the Jewish community
c _-would serve his interests more
than it would do him a disservice,"
Klein said in an interview withLe
Monde last week.
He warned that an alliance be-
tween Le Pen's National Front
and other opposition parties
would have very negative conse-
-quences. But French opposition
leaders have assured him that
such an alliance is out of the ques-
tion, Klein said.
Le Pen's party received a sub-
stantial boost and won respecta-
bility with a surprisingly good
showing
in last June's elections
-
'''tor the Parliament of Europe.
Klein described the National
Front as reminiscent of certain
politics that were ascendant in
France in the period before the
;E3 collaborationist Vichy regime
was established and some of its
<Adeas are similar to those of the
Vichy government.
Klein attributed Le Pen's popu-
larity to his ability to exploit
peoples' insecurity and economic
p tribulations. He is unabashedly ,
racist, through his polemics have
been directed mainly against im-
migrants and "guest laborers"
who have been a source of friction
in West European countries as a
result of iob shortages. Kein said.
