`Lamentations of Jeremiah'
latest work by poet Dr. Croll

Dr. Maurice Croll, for nearly
half a century a distinguished
ophthalmologist, shared his devo-
tion to hisprofession and his fam-
ily with two other affections: his
deep interest in Zionism and Is-
rael and his faith in Judaism and
his love for poetry. The latter had
an initial publishing result when
he produced his first book of
poems, five years ago, under the
title Adventures in Poetry and
Prose.
More than friends and family
acclaimed it at the time, when
scores attended autographing
sessions, cherishing his collected
poems.
Now comes the highlight in his
poetic devotion, with the publica-
tion of his Lamentations of
Jeremiah.
As an ophthalmologist, Dr.
Croll became known far beyond
his home setting for his skill and
his devotion to public needs and
services. He devoted himself to
performing eye surgery in the
rugged interiors of Paraguay and
Brazil for some 21 years. He lec-
tured there and conducted surgi-
cal eye clinics. The Croll Clinic in
Anapolis, Brazil, is among his
many gifts to humankind. He has
also conducted surgical clinics in
Korea and Hong Kong and lec-
tured in Israel.
Among the honors accorded
him is honorary citizenship of
Brazil and the recognition of the
rank of an outstanding alumnus
of Wayne State University.
His services as a physician and
his Zionist devotions are ex-
pressed in his poetry and the high-
light, Lamentations of Jeremiah,
also marks a deep study of Jewish
history and traditions. The
Jeremiad is a recapitulation of the
prophecy, and it takes into ac-
count the current struggles by re-
deemed Israel to gain the status of
complete acceptance by all faiths.
While the Croll lamentation is
an agonized recollection of the
tragedy of the destruction of the
Temple, there is imbedded in it a
measure of faith, a hope for a fu-
ture to justify the poet's pride in
his heritage.

his people, of Israel the state and
Israel the faith. His own personal
experience, the agonies that ac-

nation, is embedded in the
passionate lyrics in which he
pleads for security for kith and
kin. This is the distinguishing
beauty of the poetry that has be-
come the chief interest in the life
of Maurice Croll, with a devotion
to family, nation, and Israel that
is among the supreme achieve- -
ments in a poet of vision."
Croll dedicated his book to —
Slomovitz as follows: "This work
is dedicated to my good friend,
teacher and confidant, Mr. Philip
Slomovitz, editor and publisher of
TheJewish New for his counsel, -
adivce and teachings over the
course of our friendship of many
years."
Dr. Croll's Lamentations was
beautifully designed by Richard
Kinney, of the staff of Wayne
State University Press. The book
is illustrated with drawings based
on the interpretations of the
prophecies of Jeremiah.
