Rehabilitation, and a member of
the American Rheumatism Asso-
ciation. He is on the medical staffs
of both Providence and Sinai Hos-
pitals. He formerly was chief of
physical medicine and rehabilita-
tion at the Veterans Administra-
tion Hospital in Allen Park.
Doris Markel has appeared in
concert as well as in opera, in
leading roles for both the Detroit
Opera Guild and the Detroit Civic
Opera. She has written and di-
rected two cantatas and several
musicals. She had organized and
directed the Adat Shalom Sister-
hood Choral Group for 14 years.
She formerly taught religious
school at Adat Shalom and
Shaarey Zedek Synagogues, as
well as at Temple Beth El.
Mrs. Markel is a past president
of the sisterhood of Adat Shalom
Synagogue; is a past president of
the Music Study Club of Met-
ropolitan Detroit of which she
served for ten consecutive years
(1968-1978); was the first
president of the Michigan Branch
of the Women's League for Con-
servative Judaism of the United
Synagogues of America; was vice
president for four terms of the
Southfield Arts Council. Cur-
rently she is president-elect of the
Michigan Federation of Music
Clubs; is chairman of the board for
the Women of Jewish National
Fund; is secretary of the Pro-
Mozart Society of Greater Detroit.
Her other affiliations include
the Sinai Hospital Guild; Hadas-
sah; life member of the Detroit
Chapter of the Brandeis Univer-
sity National Women's Commit-
tee; Woman's Auxiliary of the
United Hebrew Schools; Temple
Beth El Sisterhood; Detroit Grand
Opera Association as well as
many other communal and civic
organizations.
Both Dr. and Mrs. Markel are
associates of the American
Friends of the Hebrew University
in Jerusalem; members of the
Presidents Club of the Inter-
lochen Center for the Arts; the
Zionist Organization of America;
the Jewish Braille Institute of
America; the Jewish Publication

Society of America. During his
youth, Dr. Markel was active in
the Young Judea movement
under the leadership of Philip
Slomovitz, and is active in the Re-
constructionist Foundation of
America. He is a former board
member of Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
Funds received during this
year's Shaare Zedek Hospital
Campaign will be designated for
the Jerusalem Pediatric Dialysis
Center located at the Shaare
Zedek Medical Center, announced
Dr. Lawrence Loewenthal,
president of the local Friends of
the hospital.
Additional kidney machines, at
a cost of $10,000 each, are needed
as are funds to provide the life-
saving treatment for the many
children who are in need of this
service.
Rabbi James I. Gordon of
Young Israel of Oak-Woods will
be dinner chairman, and Dr.
Michael S. Rosenbluth, the newly
appointed, director-general of
Shaare Zedek Hospital, will be
the guest speaker.

Jewish studies
annual launched

Indianapolis — The inaugural
issue of Studies in Contemporary
Jewry, an annual guide for schol-
ars in the various disciplines in
the contemporary Jewish studies
field, has been published by In-
diana University Press.
The 1984 issue of the guide in-
cludes a symposium on the 19th
Century mass immigration of
Jews from Europe and how it af-
fected those Jews who chose not to
leave, a number of monographic
and review essays and reviews of
more than 100 books on Jewish
studies.
