New Year
Arab nations would still be
clamoring for Israel's destruc-
tion!
As I see it, our job as Ameri-
can Jewish citizens is to see
that our government stays
strongly committed to Israel's
survival . . . regardless of who
becomes President of the
United States . . . that no sec-
tion of public opinion, however
loud, succeeds in undermining
the determination of Congress
to see that Israel is properly
armed . . . that no PLO-
sponsored state is set up that
will allow the USSR to infil-
trate the Holy Land for its own
divisive purposes. Dissent,
yes, on tactics and strategy,
but not on fighting the gang-
up of the United Nations and
the Third World countries who
insist in the public media that
Israel is always at fault.
We need to rally together,
we Jews, in a statesman-like
manner, not to stifle dissent,
but rather to interpret to our
neighbors the needs of the
hour, to realize the responsi-
bility which rests with us as
defenders of Israel's right to
survive .. .
The best advice I can offer is
to recall the famous response
of Moshe Dayan during the
Yom Kippur War of 1973. A
group of American leaders
asked him what they could do
to help Israel. He didn't an-
swer in terms of dollars or
political support or any other
tangible method. Instead, he
told them in simplest terms,
"Be Jews."
To be Jews, to be worthy of
all our people have sacrificed
for, to stand up and be counted
in the struggle to keep our
people alive in Israel and
throughout the world! Let us
never forget the Almighty has
not permitted our people to
survive these many centuries
only to stand idly by while a
new Israel is destroyed.
We Jews will gather to-
gether on Rosh Hashanah to
wish in the New Year. It will
bring new challenges to the
Jewish people, old problems
unresolved and new situations
unexpected. The time for re-
newal of our Jewish loyalties
has come. The High Holy Days
are the annual period not only
of self-renewal, but of solidar-
ity with our Jewish commu-
nity and the Jewish people.
