Presenting an award to Samuel Hechtman, right, for the Heroes Road
project are Rabbi Emanuel Rackman and Bar-Ilan dinner co-chairmen
Paul Zlotoff and Donald Fox.

Special to The Jewish News
"Life already provides
enough obstacles for the handi-
capped," emphasized Paul Zlotoff,
general dinner co-chairman of the
Bar-Ilan University dinner at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek last week.
"There was an inescapable need
and there was an answer, the
Heroes Road," he explained as he
welcomed a crowd of 750 to honor
Samuel Hechtman and the
Samuel Hechtman Heroes Road
for wheelchair bound students at
Bar-Ilan.
Dr. , Emanuel Rackman,
president of Bar-Ilan University,
presented a plaque to Hechtman

in recognition of his 32 years of
dedication to Bar-Ilan. Rackman
stressed that Bar-Ilan is indebted
to its Detroit friends and is very
appreciative in this, its 30th aca-
demic year.
"I also want to say a few words
about Israel" Rackman said."I
feel it's my duty. I don't like to
come to the United States and see
Jews too worried about the future
or the plight of the State of Israel,"
he said.
He explained that he is happy
when Jews are concerned but he
doesn't want concern to become
despair. "Despair is dangerous.
Impatience is dangerous. There is
nothing to despair about,"
Rackman stressed.
"Nothing can give us the feeling
that, God forbid, we are on the
brink of our own destruction or
annihilation." Rackman corn-
pared Israel to the United States,
Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina
and Brazil in regard to poverty.
He admitted that Israel has its
problems but no one sleeps on the
streets of Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.
Rackman described Bar-Ilan as
a university with a heart that
makes an enormous contribu-
tions. He feels that Bar-Ilan is
helping to solve the internal prob-
lems of the state.
He mentioned his pride in the
university's dedication to applied
research, especially in cancer re-
search. He announced that in the
last two years American com-
panies have contributed $4 mil-
lion to further this research.
Another strongpoint of the uni-
versity mentioned by Rackman is
its commitment to bringing the
Sephardim and the Ashkenazim
together. "We contribute to the
integration and economic uplift of
the disadvantaged in society, not
only the crippled, not only the
blind, but those who have been
culturally disadvantaged."
Rackman concluded his speech
with a plea that Israelis should
not lose faith in the rightness of
their cause. "The land is ours,
morally and legally," Rackman
said. He said the Heroes Road
project gives disabled Israeli
soldiers the ability to attend lec-
tures with pride and dignity. In
the past these disabled soldiers
had to find. other students who
would life them up and down
stairs on Bar-Ilan's hilly campus.
The Heroes Road is a commitment
to build a system of ramps, roads,
and curbs so that every part of
campus and every building will be
accessible to all students.
Samuel Hechtman received a
plaque marking his 32-year in-
volvement in Bar-Ilan.
Hechtman is responsible for
scholarships and other aid to
Bar-Ilan for the Detroit Friends of
the university. "Education is the
key to closing the social gap which
concerns the university and the
country so much," he explained.
"Education is an important
weapon against' delinquency.
Education is the most important
instrument in welding together
the diverse nation of Israel. Bar-
Ilan is the only university in Is-
rael that gives every student a
Jewish as well as a general educa-
tion," he said.
Cantor Larry Vieder of Adat
Shalom Synagogue sang the na-
tional anthems at the dinner.
Rabbi Efry Spectre recited the in-
vocation and Hamotzi.
