Coverage of
Zionist federation
The Detroit Zionist Federation
notes that the recent national
convention of the American
Zionist Federation held in Wash-
ington, D.C., which was of great
importance and wide interest to
the Jewish community, was not
reported in The Jewish News.
Our local Detroit Zionist Fed-
eration is comprised of 11 Zionist
organizations and seven
synagogue affiliates representing
approximately 18,000 members.
Our leadership looked in vain
for an account of the Washington
event which included talks by
Max Fisher and the Israeli Am-
bassador to the United States.
We respectfully request that
greater emphasis and higher
priority be placed on community
and cultural interests and that
significant events such as the na-
tional American Zionist Federa-
tion convention be reported and
be reported timely.
Norman Naimark,
President, Detroit Zionist Federation
(Editor's note: The only post-
convention coverage received by
The Jewish News, an interview
with the new president of the AZF,
appears today on Page 18.)
Walter Mondale
vs. Ronald Reagan
It's disturbing to read that Jews
are having difficulty deciding
whom to vote for — Mondale or
Reagan.
Let's look at the record of these
two candidates and their basic
ideas. -
State of Israel: Reagan's posi-
tion has changed from one of sup-
port of even handedness and Sec-
retary of Defense Weinberger's
statements about the need of ob-
taining the help of Saudia Arabia,
Syria and Jordan in Middle East
negotiations to one of support of
Israel.
It's really Congress that ap-
proves the laws about economic
and military aid to Israel, not the
President. Isn't it surprising that
Ms. Kirkpatrick is now the Ad-
ministration's spokesperson and
Weinberger is now silent.
Mondale has been a longtime
supporter of Israel. He's visited
there four times. His support is
not only during election time.
David Aaron, a Jew, is his Middle
East adviser. Who is Reagan's
Middle East adviser? Mondale
has been, when in the Senate, a
consistent supporter voting for
legislation benefitting Israel —
not a Johnny-come-lately.
Prayer in Schools: Reagan
wants a Constitutional amend-
ment supporting this. Mondale is
opposed, which is the traditional
position of the majority of the
Jewish community.
Civil Rights: Mondale has been
a long time activist in this area.
All of his political life he has been
in support of legislation benefitt-
ing all races and ethnic groups of
our society. Reagan has never
been on record as an activist or
supporter of civil rights. He
makes pious statements that have
been written by someone else.
The Jackson-Farrakan issue
has reflected badly on Mondale.
No doubt he should have spoken
out sooner than he did. He con-
demned Farakkan's statements,
which have now died a normal
death for lack of media exposure
and Jackson's "Hymie" remarks,
for which he apologized. Likewise,
Jackson no longer makes head-
lines — all is quiet. Mondale's
past record indicates how he will
handle any attempt to infringe
upon the rights of any group, in-
cluding the Jews.
Why isn't Reagan being pres-
sured to repudiate his statements
and those of his cohorts, Senator
Laxalt and the extreme rightist
fringe calling for a Christian na-
tion?
What's more dangerous to the
nation as a whole and particularly
Jews and other minority groups?
Mondale with Jackson's support
or a U.S. Supreme Court with a
majority of judges supporting
school prayer, tuition tax credits,
restricting the Fifth Amendment
and other civil rights? Have we
become so anti-black that we will
vote for Reagan's almost lily-
white Administration?
Environment: Mondale has
been endorsed by all the major
environmental groups. Reagan
has been condemned by these
same groups for his devastating
policies including the appoint-
ments of Watts and Buford.
Tax Policies: Reagan's tax bills
benefitted the more affluent
rather than those that need it the
most. Are Jews now abandoning
their consistent philosophy of
helping those in need or becoming
the people who want to preserve
and advance their status at the
expense of others?

Begin undergoes
prostate surgery
Jerusalem (JTA) — Former
Premier Menachem Begin
underwent surgery for a prostate
condition at Shaare Zedek Hospi-
tal on Friday and is recovering
and feeling well. His aide, Yehiel
Kadishai, told reporters that the
operation was successful.
Begin, 71, was hospitalized for
tests which determined that he
did not have a malignancy. His
surgeon, Dr. Amihai Farkas, head
of the urology department at
Shaare Zedek, said his condition
was not uncommon for a man of
his age.
Sources close to Begin ex-
pressed hope that once he is fully
recovered he would emerge from
his self-imposed seclusion.
