LISTENING POST

DANNY RASKIN

&mallow

THERE'S ENOUGH SPACE
to hold a dance . . . and the way
things have been going, owners of
Rena's Flowers in Orchard Mall,
Orchard Lake Rd. north of Maple,
are already doing a rapid jig.
Recent grand opening of the
2,618-square-foot store brought
about 250 people oohing and aah-
ing at the airy, colorful store for-
merly occupied by Bottle 'n Gift.
Art Baker came back from New
York to attend with wife, Ina .. .
after a phenomenal recuperation
from surgery at University Hospi-
tal in Ann Arbor . . . Rena's
hubby, Tom, was a "Mr. Every-
thing," on scaffold painting the
walls, on floor building counters
and so much, much more . . . Sue
Ritten, Barbara's daughter, a pre-
tty young lassie, so polite and
stylish . . . Fred Weinstein still
wearing a bow tie as in so many
years . . . Paul Newman, head of
Northville Laboratories, winner
of two gold medals for world's best
vanilla . . . He owns Praline name
. . . Abe "Curly" Schwartz in from
Corpus Christi, Texas for daugh-
ter Rena's opening, used to help
out eons ago for Sam Ginsburg at
Central Florist on Dexter Blvd.
. . . Bob Childs of John Kent
Clothes at Orchard Mall saying
there actually is a John Kent .. .
general manager at one of the six
stores . . . Steve Romanick supply-
ing goodies to eat . . . Food broker
Abe Cohen looking good . . . Fur-
rier Arthur Bricker comfortably
casual after shirt and tie all day
. . . So many people wishing Rena
and Barbara loads of luck . . . It
takes more than well wishes .. .
but these two gals have the most
important facets . . . much per-
sonality . . . and talent.
THERE WAS MUCH MORE
than bagels, lox and cream cheese
in bag for David Stone . . . after
purchase at Detroit Bagel Factory
on Orchard Lake Rd. in Far-
mington Hills . . . Another bag
was in there . . . with $500 cash
. . . which a very honest young
David returned.
CONGRATS . . . to fashion
show producer Leah Marks . . . on
her birthday.
OPTIMISM IS the word for
City of Hope, Sophie & Harry
Hoffman Chapter . . . with draw-
ing for two World Series tickets at
one home game . . . However,
realism sets in . . . If the Tigers
don't make the Series, a ten-speed
bike will be given away instead
. . . Call President Irene Light,
545-0913, or Henry Averbuch,
356-3442 . . . Drawing is Oct. 7 .. .
Don't be mad if I don't pick out
your ticket.
NATIONAL SINGLES
WEEK may have ended in official
capacity last week . . . but it really
never is finished.
And so, why not greeting cards
geared strictly for singles? .. .
These are the very clever ones put
out by Barbara Shefflin and her
Barbill Publishing Co. . . . with
front and inside sayings like .. .
"Because it was so very nice . . . I
hope it will happen twice" ... or
"The single's life is a candy store.
An open market of goodies galore
. . . Although there's so much to
pick through, I know my favorite
flavor is you" . . . plus cutesies like
"I'd like to cook your dinner, of

this there is no doubt . . . But I
have never learned to cook, so
could you take me out?" . . . and so
many, many more.
Two years ago, when she got
started, Nate Peiss at Specialty
Printing on Coolidge gave Bar-
bara her first order . . . Now the
count is already up to 30 stores .. .
and growing . . . including
Fisher's Hallmark in Tel-12 Mall,
Telegraph and 12. Let's Entertain
at Hunter's Square, Orchard Lake
Rd. and 14 . . . among them.
Always nice to know single
folks haven't been forgotten.
REUNION DEPT. . . . Thir-
tieth by Mumford High, class of
1954, is Nov. 17 at Kingsley Inn
. . . Classmates are being sought
. . . Contact Henry Moses, 398-
4565, or Myrna Glicker Edgar,
626-7583.
CONGRATS to Florist Sol and
Bess Rosenman . . . in London,
England celebrating their 54th
anniversary . . . and her 73rd
birthday.
SHARON REED, bosslady at
Bloomfield Facial Renewal,
Orchard-12 Plaza on Orchard
Lake Rd. and 12 Mile, was re-
cently named official beauty
sponsor for 1985 Mrs. Michigan-
America Pageant slated for
March 6 at Premier Center on
Van Dyke.
The Mrs. Michigan-America
Pageant, in its ninth year, is open
to all married gals regardless of
age.
FAYE AND FRED WEINER,
former Detroiters, now of Delray
Beach, Fla., were in town for bar
mitzvah of Jordon Willner at
Sheraton-Oaks in Novi . . . Their
31/2-year-old Texan grand-
daughter, Allison, picked grand-
dad Fred, 75, for a dance contest
. . . and took first place . . . Allison
lives in Dallas with ex-Detroiter
parents Debi and Douglas
Weiner.

CONGRATS . . . to Jeanna
(Bliefield) and Jack Tauber . . . on
their 45th anniversary . . . They
returned to Detroit after living in
Atlanta, Ga. for three years .. .

welcomed them back with an-
niversary party at Meriwether's
restaurant on Telegraph.
