New decree allows
for religious classes

Santiago (JTA) — Under a new
law enacted this week, secondary
schools and parents of pupils are
entitled to demand that the school
administration make provision
for the establishment of Jewish
religious classes, the World
Jewish Congress reported Sun-
day.
Accordirig to the Latin Ameri-
can branch of the WJC, the right
to Jewish religious classes is for-
mally elaborated in decree no. 78
in the Diario Oficial (official
gazette) of the Chilean Republic.
Entitled "Program for Jewish
religion in primary and secondary
education," the decree was signed
by the President of the republic
and the Minister of Education.
Under its terms, the program
seeks to apply the concepts of
Jewish ethics, morality and phi-
losophy in daily life, teaching how
to love and respect one's neighbor
like oneself, learning self-
contentment and self-
enhancement, and praying with
devotion and concentration.
Specific aims of the program are
the knowledge of basic symbols of
Jewish holidays, certain prayers,
liturgical chants and stories of the
Bible.

Cairo (ZINS) — Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak re-
cently said in a radio broadcast
that Egypt will be afflicted by
"hunger, unemployment and ter-
ror" unless its high birth rate is
reduced.
Egypt's annual natural rate of
increase — 2.7 percent — is the
highest in the world. At that rate,
Egypt's population of 47 million
could double in 22 years.

Jerusalem (ZINS) — According
to a recent study, Israel has 150
plants employing 60,000 workers
which manufacture armaments.
The workers represent 20 percent
of Israel's industrial labor force.

Jerusalem (ZINS) — Dr. Mic-
kail Agursky of Hebrew Univer-
sity recently charged that indi-
viduals in Israel's Labor Align-
ment government in 1973 worked
against Jewish immigration from
Russia.
He wrote in the Russian lan-
guage weekly Nes, published in
Jerusalem, that government
leaders feared the immigrants
would vote for right-wing parties
in the 1973 Knesset elections.
