THE
State may sue
school district
over Bible clubs
State Superintendent of Public
Instruction Philip Runkel said
this week that he would initiate a
lawsuit against a western Michi-
gan school district in order to pre-
vent meetings of weekly Bible
clubs currently scheduled at two
elementary schools in the district.
Runkel announced Tuesday
that he will ask State Attorney
General Frank Kelley to sue the
Howard City School District and
the Tri-County Board of Educa-
tion following the board's unani-
mous approval of the lunch-hour
club meetings, which are slated to
begin next month at the Sand
Lake and McNaughton schools.
The meetings, which will be led by
officials of Bible Club Ministry
Inc., would constitute a violation
of the constitutional principle of
separation of church and state,
Runkel charged. Kelley noted a
recent U.S. Supreme Court deci-
sion prohibiting, the meeting of
such clubs on school property dur-
ing school hours.
School officials in Howard City,
which is just north of Grand
Rapids, said that since most stu-
dents are bused to and from the
district's schools, holding such ac-
tivities outside of regular school
hours would be impractical.
