Rev. James Lyons will address
Shaarey Zedek women's brunch
The Sisterhood of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek will begin a new

year of events with a paid-up
> <7; membership brunch on Sept. 17 at
11 a.m. in the Morris Adler Hall of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
The program will feature Rev.
James R. Lyons, director of the
Ecumenical Institute for
Jewish-Christian Studies, who
will speak on "Facing History and
Ourselves."Rev. Lyons has served
as pastor of Congregational
churches for the past 25 years,
most recently at the Pine Hill
Congregational Church in West
Bloomfield. He earned both his
B.A. degree in speech and M.A.
degree in Middle Eastern lan-
guages and literature at Wayne
State University. He has pursued
doctoral studies at the University
of Michigan in the same field.
In addition to his church posi-
tions, Rev. Lyons was associate
director of the office or religious
affairs at WSU. He was director of
the Walker and Gertrude Cisler
Library at WSU, a facility dedi-
cated to the Holocaust and the
study of the role of the churches
during the Nazi period in Ger-
many.
Rev. Lyons has conducted re-
search in Europe and Israel on the
Holocaust, church struggle in
Nazi Germany and on contempor-
ary Jewish-Christian relations.
He has traveled extensively in
the Middle East, where he pur-

scholarly articles to religious pub-
lications and delivered papers at
ecumenical gatherings.

Greater Detroit Chapter,
Hadassah, will hold its opening
meeting and afternoon tea on
Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Cong.

The guest speaker will be
Robert Mayer Evans, former CBS
News foreign correspondent and
news bureau chief in Moscow. As
a foreign correspondent he has
worked in several dozen countries
spread over five continents.
Evans has worked on both sides
of the Iron Curtain in Eastern,
and Western Europe, in China as
well as in Arab and oil-producing
countries around the Persian
Gulf. He has traveled to Israel,
covering wars as well as peace
negotiations. His topic will be
"Today in the Middle East."
Elaine Sturman is vice
president of programming. The
Norma Schonwetter, home
economist, will teach "Basic
Micro Magic" at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.,
beginning Oct. 17, and "Ethnic
Micro Magic" at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.,
beginning Dec. 5 at the Oak Park
Community Center.
