Bob Bernardi

Richard Schaefer, is a very
congenial and knowledge-
able host . . . Chef Charles
Cekala, former executie
chef at Saber Room of Hill-
crest Country Club, Topin-
ka's Country House and
Sheraton-Southfield, began
work at Pike Street Co. res-
taurant before its beginning
. . . doing much con-
sulatioon from Nov. 28 until
it opened to the public in
January after many "dry
runs."
I like the beautiful pre-
sentation of food at Pike
Street Co. . . . and the cold
salad with creamy chunky
and dry rocquefort . . . It
also makes its own
cheesecake and cherry and
apple pie . . . which are con-
sidered by many dessert
eaters as superb offerings.
Fitzpatrick and Kreger
are aggressive owners .. .
always thinking of ways to
promote their operation .. .
Every Thursday night fea-
tures personality barten-
ders (they pour the booze
like water, I'm told) . . . and
Mgnday evenings, PR gent
Elliott "E.T." Trumbull
broadcasts live inerviews
from the restaurant 7 to 8
p.m. over WPON, 1460 AM.
Pike Street Co. is divided
into three rooms ... a
porch-like addition to the
original building, dining
room with huge round
booths and large lounge
with 15 padded-seat bar.
It is open Monday
through Wednesday 11-12
midnight, Thursday and
Friday til 2 a.m. and Satur-
day, 4:30 p.m..-2 a.m....
Beginning Sept. 2 at 1030
a.m., brunch will begin . . .
with two shuttle buses
available to nearby Silver-
dome and Detroit Lions
football . . . The restaurant
will be open until 9 on Sun-
days.
Steve Ziff echoed the
words of so many who have
been to Pike Street Co. for
the first time .... "I'll defi-
nitely be back."

TOM GOULAS, co-
owner of Honey Tree carry-
out in Tally Hall, Orchard
Lake Rd. and 14 Mile, with
Connie Efstathiou, has
opened two more Greek
souvlaki carry-out opera-
tions . . . Toledo, Ohio and
Viiginia Beach, Va. ..
Both are called Athenian
Cafe . . . Tom's nephew,
Pete Goulas, runs Toledo
spot, and a friend operates
Virginia Beach.

ways, • was wonderful, and
the service was up to the
usual high standards.
Owner Frank Pasalacqua
came over to the table to say
'Hi' and when Wendy men-
tioned the occasion he made
sure that dinner was extra
special. With his help, the
evening was turned into a
mini party. I read mixed re-
views in the papers and
magazines on Mario's and I
never understand why. For
my money,' it is the
greatest"

MILTON BERLE once
played Pittsburgh for a
one-week stand ... On
Monday he picked out a res-
taurant that looked attrac-
tive to him, and liked every-
thing except the bread . . . "I
always eat whole wheat," he
told the waitress, but she
brought white . On Tues-
day he reminded her about
the wheat, but was served
white again . . . Same thing
Wesnedsday, Thursday and
Friday . . . Finally on
Saturday when she took his
order, Berle said casually,
"Just for the heck of it, I
think I'll take white bread
today" . . . "That's funny,;
said the waitress. "Aren't
you the party who always
orders whole wheat?"
