Anti-Semitism
charged against
Nicaragua

Miami — In the wake of
Reagan administration
charges of anti-Semitigm in
Nicaragua, a delegation of,
Jewish human rights ac-'
departed last week
on a fact-finding mission to
Nicaragua. "We intend to
investigate whether anti-
Semitism exists in
Nicaragua or whether these
charges are part of a plan to
manipulate Jewish concern
about anti-Semitism for
partisan political advan-
tage," said Rabbi Gerald
Serotta, a spokesperson for
the group. The delegation
will meet with representa-
tives of the Nicaraguan
government, opposition
leaders, and members of
Nicaragua's Jewish com-
munity.
Earlier this year the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith (ADL) asserted
that the Nicaraguan gov-
erriment forced the coun-
try's small Jewish popula-
tion to leave the country.
The Reagan Administra-
tion has echoed these claims
and, as recently as July 2,
Assistant Secretary of State
for Human Rights, Elliot
Abrams, appealed to
American Jews to support
the Administration's
policies in Central America.
"The small Jewish com-
munities in Central
America understand that
Communism poses a real
threat to their very survival
as Jews," Abrams said. "We
cannot let them down."
Members of Nicaragua's
Jewish community dispute
the ADL charges, claiming
that those Jews who left the
country did so not because
they were Jewish, but be-
cause they had close ties
with the Samoza regime.
