said he was "a little disappointed"
that his parents would be out of town
during the competition, he hoped
that other family members, as well as
friends, would tarn out for the
Games.
Many members of the Detroit
Maccabi Youth team are hosting
out-of-town athletes during the
Games and, for some, the event will
take on a real family flavor. Cousins
Debby Hecker, 16, and Tracey Co-
hen, 1-5, both won spots on the girl's
basketball team. Hecker, who plays
soccer at Andover High .School but
has played organized basketball for
the past five years, learned about the
games through her synagogue, Tem-
ple Kol Ami in West Bloomfield. Her
family will house two foreign
athletes for the duration of the
competition and she is eager to meet
them.

The Cohens, meanwhile, will
play host to four Maccabi partici-
pants fromout of town. Although she
doesn't know as yet what part of the
country or which 'continent her
guests will hail from, Tracey hopes to
make friends with somebody from Is-
rael during the competition.

Involvement in the Games has
thus far been a positive experience
for most of the coaches, who, in turn,
feel the week-long competition will
provide many memorable moments
for their players.

"What I missed as a swimmer,
being Jewish, was meeting a lot of
other Jewish swimmers," Borovoy
said. "I love seeing the kids together,
being a part of something that prom-
otes not only sports, but religion as
well."

Republican Senator pushes strong
anti-racism Plank for 1984 platform

Washington (JTA) —
Sen. Alfonse D'Amato (R-
N.Y.) this week called on
the Republican Party to in-
clude in its 1984 platform
an anti-racism plank and a
strong' stand against anti-
Semitism. In a letter to Sen.
Paula Hawkiim

co-chairperson of the Re-
publican Platform CominR ,-
tee, D'Amato said the GOR
"must take every opportU-
nity to restate that we find
obnoxious and repulsive all
public expressions based on
bigotry, hatred, racism and
anti-Se9i0sm, To do ainy

less, would imply a lack of
resolve to fight the kinds of
evil that could destroy our
domestic tranquility and
our national harmony."
D'Amato criticized the
Democratic Party for failing
to adopt a similar plank at
their convention,
