taurants on the northwest
side of town . . . is among the
most consistently suc-
cessful.
DeLuca's, Woodward and
111/2 Mile Rd., opened 11
years ago . . . in a 'free-
standing building with
plenty of parking . . . and
has been drawing raves of
goodness lately from cus-
tomers.
Its doors were thrown
open on March 13, 1973 .. .
and has always been noted
for its beauty . . . with seat-
ing for 150 in the main din-
ing room and 50 in a lounge
where pianist-songster
Lenny Randall has never
left after coming in May of
that first year . . . Buddy
Clark at the piano on Sun-
days, has also been there 11
years.
Booths and tables are
covered with print tablec-
loths and red napkins . . .
White columns give an ele-
gant Roman look . .. as the
white dining room walls are
interspersed with green
stucco inserts . . . Six
wrought iron arches above
booths separate the dining
room and cocktail lounge
. . . Small hanging lanterns
are over booths on one side
of the dining room .. Red
lamps hang from the dark
wood booth walls on each
side.
DeLuca's is extremely
neat . . . and so conducive to
fine dining . . . with its
warm, intimate and cozy
atmosphere..
This is real Italian dining
. . . at reasonable prices ..
When Owner Dennis • De-
Luca was a youngster, his
father said, "If you can af-
ford only one suit, buy the
best you ,are able to. It'll
look better and last longer."
. . . In a great measure, this
could be the pattern for De-
nnis' success . . . Quality is
number one at DeLuca's .. .
and it certainly has contin-
ued . . . at prices people can
afford.
The pizzas have always
been top notch at DeLuca's
. .. and only Provimi veal is
used . .'. Our dinner there
recently brought' an inward
feeling of wonderment why
some folks forget to come
here.
The hostess alone is cause
for so many people to flock
DeLuca's way . . . She is
very knowledgeable, smil-
ing and cordial Peggy Man-
ganella, who started with
Mildred Hund at North-
wood Inn on Woodward . . .
and then spent 27 glorious
years greeting people at
Club Berkley , .. Peggy is at
DeLuca's Friday, Saturday
and Sunday evenings.
One of the evening wait-
resses, Lou Mix, is also tigal
many folks will know .. .
She was with Sammy
Lieberman five years at his
Avalon. Restaurant .. with
Sam Davis and Ben Gottleib
and later Ben Kasle at
Berman's Chop House .. .
then five years with Sam
Boesky evenings at Darby's.
Our waitress at DeLuca's,
Jean Masi, was delightfully
efficient, with a very pleas .
ant smile and gracious per-
sonality . . . She started us
out with an antipasto salad
that seemed to be a forebear
of good things to come .. .
The lettuce was firm and
cold . . . and salad not overly
doused with dressing . .
Then came DeLuca's delici-
ous, full-bodied minestrone
soup without the slighteit
tomatdey, hint.
The three persons in our
party tried' veal piccante,
veal tosca and veal par-
migiaaa . . . Chef Mario
•'Antonio treated the ele-
gant Provimi Veal with deft
touches of • full flavor deli-
cacy.
The fresh vegetables used
at DeLuca's are important
. . . Our broccoli . was
steamed and then stir-fried
to retain its original juices
and provide 'an unusually
good taste.
Our bottle of Soave Bolla
pale golden •wine was vel-
vety fresh, well balanced
and softly dry. '
Each in our party had the
individual 'portions of De-
Lima's specialty . .
homemade lasagna . . . con- •
sidered among the best by
aficionados . . . It is truly a
superb side dish.
You must have the rum
cake made at DeLuca's . . .
Delicious isn't the word for
it . . . outstanding to be sure.
. DeLuca's is open seven
days a week . . . Monday .
through Saturday from 11
a.m. .. . and Sundays and
holidays froth 4 p.m.
The lounge where there is
so much action and loads of
fun will soon be made larger
The wall will be pushed
back 10 feet .. . and there
will be dancing.
Italian 'dining isn't the
only thing good at DeLuca's
. .. Dennis' steaks, chops
and 12 Seafoods besides spe-
cials are also in an elite
taste class now according to
many.
Next time you go to De-
Luca's, don't neglect the
bread basket . . . Inside the
cloth napkin covering are
some of the most delicious
soft bread sticks you'll taste
. . . A tip, though . . . don't
fill up on them . there's so
much fine food coming from
your waitperson at DeLu-
ca's.
NICKY'S of Troy on W.
'Big Beaver, has already
begun plans for•its first an-
niversary party . ; . which •
should be a very packed af-
fair . . . owners Nick Sorise
and John Reaser are start-
ing early to make certain
they don't leave anybody '
out in what is•xpected to be
one of the year's gala nitery
events.
The musical group that
opened at Nicky's, Sept. 2,
1983, Attractions, will re-
turn to lend a first-year
flavor to the celebration.
Already planned are
caricaturist, video taping
plus creative hors d'oeuvres ,
