ADL chairman defends

`Jewish lobby' in capital

New York (JTA) —
Claiming that there is noth-
ing "un-American in Jewish
citizens exercising their
rights as other Americans
do to influence public affairs
and policies," Kenneth
Bialkin, chairman of the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith (ADL) Sunday
scored critics of the so-called .
Jewish lobby in Washing-
ton.
In his report to the ADL
national commission meet-
ing in New York, Bialkin
said that what this country
needs is "more, not less in-
terested citizens to exercise
these rights." Bialkin, who
was elected to a second
two-year term by the com-
mission, also discussed
anti-Semitism, the
Presidential campaign and
developments in Israel.
Richard Stone, President
Reagan's former special
envoy to Central America
and ambassador at large,
told the delegates that
Jewish businessmen in
Central America and sev-
eral countries in South
America hal.% become spe-
cial targets of left wing
guerrillas. He said they are
victims of kidnapping, ex-
tortion and anti-Zionist
propaganda, as well as
political pressures.

.

The former Florida
Democratic senator said the
number of Jewish
businessmen who have been
kidnapped is greater, prop-
ortionately, than the
number of non-Jewish
businessmen who have suf-
fered the same fate. Stone
said the guerrillas who have
victimized them have close
connections with the Pales-
tine Liberation Organiza-
tion to make Jews the
