Jackson, Farrakhan Jews:
a politically hot summer due

Usually, Jewish organ-
izations are relatively dor-
mant during the summer.
Their leaders are resting on
vacations. However, this
will not be the case this
summer.
The slur by Rev. Jesse
Jackson calling American
Jews "Hymies" and New
York City "Hymietown,"
his public embrace of PLO
leader Yassir Arafat during
his visit to the Middle East
several years ago, his re-
fusal to reject support from
Louis Farrakhan who pub-
licly voiced threats against
American Jews durincr a
campaign speech b for
Jackson and declared that
"Hitler was a great man"
and threatened Washington
Post reporter Milton Cole-
man who first disclosed the
anti-Jewish slurs by
Jackson, will not allow
Jewish leaders to rest. It
signalizes danger for
American Jewry.
In refusing to disassociate
himself from Farrakhan,
Jackson stated that he him-
self finds nothing great in
Hitler and that the Nazi
leader was to him "despica-
ble." He "explained" his re-
fusal to disavow Farrakhan
by asserting that any
nominee by the Democratic
Party for President will
have strong extremes
within the party. Later,
Jackson was quoted on tele-
vision as having said that
"he is not in a position" to
,repudiate Farrakhan's sup-
port.
This attitude, naturally,
has a deeply disturbing ef-

fect on Jewish leaders.
Jewish organizations, by
tradition, abstain from
recommending voting for or
against any candidate run-
ning for public office. They
will continue this policy
also with regard to Jackson.
But the atmosphere of un-
easiness which Jackson
brought about prevails now
even among Jews who
would have voted for him as
an expression of their sup-
port for black causes, They
consider him now a poten-
tial danger to American
Jewry.
Jackson has no chance
this year of being nomi-
nated by the Democratic
Party convention as their
Presidential or even- their
Vice Presidential candi-
date. And he knows it.
There is a strong sentiment
among Democratic Party
leaders to nominate a
woman as candidate for
Vice President. Women now
constitute 53 percent of the
nation's voting population.
Six million more women
than men will be voting in
November. Polls indicate
conclusively that a woman
on the Democratic ticket in
the number two spot would
mean this year the dif-
ference between victory or
defeat for the Democrats.
Jackson is aware of this.
But he hopes to reach his
goal in the elections. His
present campaigning is
aimed merely to pave the
way for him for the future
by stimulating more black
voters to go to the polls this
year and to increase their

numbers in the coming
years.
He also anticipates that
in years of unemployment
and inflation, many affected
white voters will cast their
ballots for him. He alp
seeks to win the support e
the Hispanic population
which will, in the very near
future, become the nation's
largest minority group —
larger than_ the many mil-
lions of black citizens — due
to a high birthrate. With
this combination of forces,
Jackson figures on being ul-
timately elected to the
White House.
Black-Jewish relations
will be very high on the
agenda of the Jewish con-
ventions this season. It may
become Problem Number
One for American Jewry as
a result of the anti-Jewish
sentiments displayed by
Jackson and Farrakhan and .
Jackson's ambition to be-
come President.
Jackson speaks of a
"rainbow coalition," mean-
ing to gain support from
other minorities. But he has
antagonized the Jews — a
pillar of such a coalition. He
will have to do something
impressive and convincing
to repair the damage he has
done. He hardly has a
chance to win Hispanics to
his side. The Hispanic
community has its own
interests and ambitions and
is quickly growing and
gaining influence. Leaders
of Hispanic groups do not
see eye-to-eye with him on
many subjects. •
On the other hand,
Hispanic-Jewish dialogue is
developing in a friendly
spirit of common under-
standing. On the agenda of
Jewish organizations active
in the field of civil rights
and intergroup relations
there is a high-priority pro-
gram of strengthening
Hispanic-Jewish coalitional
cooperation, as well as in-
tensifying cooperation with
other ethnic groups in the
country.
Coalition building — in-
cluding coalition with black
groups who do not share the
bias of Jackson and Far-
rakhan — will henceforth
become a major activity or
Jewish organizatior
engaged in protecting civil
rights. They will seek to de-
velop a multi-group consen-
sus agenda for such coali-
tion, built on understanding
each other's goals.

Terror base?

Cairo — The Palestine
Liberation Organization
has asked Egypt for permis-
sion to use that country as a
base for terror operations
against Israel.
