Foxman hits
masochism'

New York — A national
Jewish community leader,
himself a survivor of the
Holocaust, has called the
American Jewish Commis-
sion on the Holocaust an
-7 "example of Jewish masoch-
ism."
In a letter to the New
Q
York Times responding to
news reports of the Com-
mission's findings that
American Jews did not do
enough to save their breth-
ren, Abraham H. Foxman,
associate national director
of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith, said
that like all survivors he
wants to know "why no one
came to our rescue."
But he went on to ask:
"Why is it only the Jews,
those with the least power
at the time, who seek the
answer, not from others,
from themselves?" He said
he was "profoundly trou-
bled" that while the Nazis
killed, and nations like the
U.S. which knew about it
and had some power to af-
fect it stood by, "it is the vic-
tims — and all Jews were
victims or potential victims
— who investigate them-
selves, chastise them-
selves."
