"Being A Jew
Means I Belong:'

Ruth, Bob, Andrew and Daniel
are in a heated discussion
centered on their feelings about
being mentally retarded.
In the coffee house tradition,
JARC staff lead residents in
discussions of various issues.
Groups are divided by level of
functioning and discuss subjects
such as: Being a Jew, Death and
Dying, Being Mentally
Retarded, and other emotional
issues. Other residents, some of
whom are non-verbal, have
worked on such issues as name
recognition and basic decision
making. Afterwards,
refreshments are served.

"She's My
Honey!"

Jim and Amy have been dating
for over two years. Twice a
month they attend the Couples
Club for residents who have
developed a special
relationship. They enjoy the
activities such as a dance at one
of the homes or dinner at a
restaurant, but the discussion
groups are their favorite.
Facilitated by staff, the group
discusses relevant topics such as
the responsibilities of a
relationship and the joys and
problems of dating.

A Haverim Home
Dedicated To You

You can make a new Haverim

six mentally retarded men or
women waiting for placement.
The gift of a house would honor
you with a Haverim Home

dedicated in your name and
provide six people with a new
beginning.

A "Scholarship"
Of Care

Donna's parents cared for her at
home all their lives. As they
entered their 70's they worried
about Donna's future when
they would no longer be able to
provide for her. Her acceptance
into a Haverim Home was a
dream come true. Donna's
social security and SSI benefits
are $14 per day. But to provide
her with a well run, well
staffed, loving home with a
Jewish atmosphere, JARC needs
over $40 per day. Other public
funds are not available and
Donna's parents are retirees of
limited means.
