Of Rebirth . . . and

At this season of rebirth of our people as
a nation, we are mindful of the relationship
between the ancient festival of Passover
and the contemporary challenges that
concern us as Jews.
This period of renewal is replete with the
symbolism and history of a people unique
among the nations: the Exodus from Egypt,
the uprising of a valiant remnant in the
Ghetto of Warsaw, the creation of a
modern nation in only 36 years.
It is a time for reawakening — to a new
appreciation of the values we hold dear, as
individuals, as families, as a community.
And it is a time of renewal — of our commit-
ment to Jewish Peoplehood, to our brothers
and sisters in Israel, to those suffering from
oppression and those in want .. .
in Detroit, where the aged, the impover-
ished and the infirm cry out for our help,
not always aloud, often in silence and isola-
tion. in the Soviet Union, where once again
the gates have swung shut on our people
yearning for freedom to live as )ews. in
Romania and Syria, in Ethiopia and
Morocco. Wherever a )ewish heart beats.
Our ) ewish community of Detroit has a
long-cherished commitment to renewal — a
social contract that is honored through our
participation in the Allied Jewish Campaign.
And each of us is a partner to that contract.
Therefore, we, the congregational rabbis of
metropolitan Detroit, call upon our members
and upon every Jew to make his or her best
contribution to the 1984 Allied Jewish
Campaign. in this expression of caring, we
share in the renewal of the Jewish People.
