States Constitution face a
dilemma requiring serious
thought, according to a new
• booklet published by the
American Jewish Comilla-
tee.
The booklet, titled. The
" Pornography Issue: A
Jewish View," was written
by Lawrence Grossman, a
▪ program specialist in AJC's
Jewish Communal Affairs
Department.
Citing the Bible, the
Talmud and other tradi-
tional Jewish sources, Dr.
Grossman says that
Judaism insists that sex be
' "deeply human . . :personal
. . .not merely instinctual,"
and accompanied by love
and respect — while por-
• nography deals in the de-
humanization of sexuality
and the debasement of
human dignity."
Moreover, he continues,
"sexual exploitation, rape
and sado-masochism, which
are so often portrayed in
pornography, are antitheti-
cal to Jewish teachings
about violence."
Judaism "is not a prudish
culture," Dr. Grossman em-
phasizes, "and unlike
Christianity, it associates
no stigma with sexual ac-
tivity . . .Sexual matters are
described (in the Bible) with
no sense of embarrassments
. . .and one book of Scrip-
ture, the Song of Songs, is a
long love poem (whose)
graphic imagery did not
prevent its inclusion in the
biblical canon."
Furthermore, the AJC
booklet continues, the
Jewish view maintains that
"God created the pleasures
of the physical world for the
enjoyment of mankind,"
and- it also holds that "hus-
band and wife may be as
erotic toward each other as
they please."
But, Dr. Grossman stres-
ses, "the tradition also
teaches that the enjoyment
of this Godly gift (sexuality)
should be channeled into
the marriage relationship,"
adding:
"Though Judaism teaches
that God gave us the world
for our enjoyment, the ulti-
mate purpose of life is not
hedonism, but social and
spiritual improvement."
Turning'to the question of
pornography as a "de-
humanizing" force, Dr.
Grossman says that Jewish
tradition is strongly against
"expressing sexuality as
pure instinct, as the ani-
mals do."
Israel's wheels
Jerusalem (JNI) — The
Central Bureau of Statis-
tics' announced this month
that a record number of new
cars was supplied to the
country last year. The
nearly 87,000 private cars
' sold represent a 24 percent
' ,increase over 1982 and a 41
percent increase over 1981.
