Cong. Bnai David and
Cong. Shaarey Zedek will
have a twinned Bar Mitzva
and Bnot Mitzva, respec-
tively, at Shabat services
Saturday morning.
At 8:30 a.m. Saturday,
Jeremy Shere will share his
Bar Mitzva at Cong. Bnai
David with Seva Genis of
Russia.
Since 1979 Seva's par-
ents, Anatoly and Galia,
have twice been refused
permission to emigrate
from Russia. Anatoly is a
brother-in-law of the well
known refusnik Yuli
Kosherovsky. The Genis
family has not been given
any reason for the denial of
exit visas.
Jeremy is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. (Margaret) Shere.
A special empty chair will
be placed on the Bnai David
bima to recognize Seva's
Bar Mitzva in absentia.
At 8:45 a.m. Saturday at
Shaarey Zedek, Ariana
Jackier and Nicole Segel
will share their special
ceremonies with Anna
Chernobilsky of Russia.
Anna's parents, Boris and
Elena of Moscow are both
radio engineers. Since the
family applied to leave the
Soviet Union in 1975 and
were refused the following
year, Boris has not been
able to work in his field. He
has worked at a series of odd
jobs between periods of un-
employment. His wife
teaches Hebrew to a group
of young children.
The Chernobilskys have
been repeatedly harassed
by the KGB over the years.
In 1981, Chernobilsky was
arrested on charges of
"beating a policeman" who
later incorrectly identified
another dissident as Boris.
There have been repeated
arrests, unexplained deten-
tions and refusals of per-
mission to leave the Soviet
Union.
The Chernobilskys study
Jewish history and culture
and celebrate Jewish holi-
days. Boris has in particu-
lar, maintained contact
with the Jews of Ilyinka, a
collective settlement whose
members are not granted
exit visas, and with prisoner
of conscience Vladimir
Slepak in Siberian exile.
Ariana is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence
(Rochelle) Jackier. Nicole is
the daughter of Dr. and Mrs.
David (Roberta) Segel.
