French Jewry Is Thriving

Caricatures

By RABBI MARC
TANENBAUM
What is your image of
French Jewry?
Do you think French Jews
are besieged- — cowering,
frightened in the wake of
the recent bombings of
synagogues and Jewish res-
taurants?
Frankly, I had some loose
impressions such as those.
They were strongly dispel-
led as a result of a recent
visit to Paris during which I

met with the heads of all the
major Jewish organizations
as well as with Israel's Am-
bassador to France, Ovadim
Sofer, and Chief Rabbi Rene
Sirat (formerly from
Algeria).
First of all, French
Jewry is blessed with ex-
ceedingly impressive and
dignified Jewish leaders.
Baron David de
Rothschild, youthful,
chic and handsome, car-
ries on the legendary tra-
ditions of his justly proud
ancestors as president of
French Jewry's UJA, the
Fond Social Juifs Unifie.
Theo Klein, a brilliant in-
ternational lawyer and de-
eply committed Labor
Zionist (who speaks He-
brew), heads the powerful
political action arm of
France's 700,000 Jews, the
CRIF.
Jean Paul Elkann, the
impeccably elegant director
of Christian Dior, is
president of the French
Consistoire. Mme. Nicole
Goldmann, attractive and
articulate, directs the
European Council of Jewish
Communities.
Jules Braunschvig, Al-
liance Israelite Universelle
president, is effective even
in his advanced age. Gerard
Israel of the Alliance is a
significant force as a deputy
to the European Parlia-
ment.
Each of these French
Jewish leaders is well-
connected• with French
government and political
leaders and represent
French Jewry with
strength and effective-
ness. We shared many
concerns about Israel,
Soviet and Syrian Jew-
ries, anti-Semitism.
I came' away deeply im-
pressed by their being very
much at home as Fren-
chmen, their feelings of se-
curity and growth, and
above all, their profound
commitments to everything
Jewish.
