NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Commit-
tee has joined Americans
United for Separation of
Church and State, the Na-
tional Council of Churches
of Christ, and the American
Baptist Church in the
U.S.A., in challenging the
constitutionality of a
charitable solicitation ordi-
nance recently enacted by
the city of Clearwater, Fla.
The ordinance, which is
intended to prevent fraud in
the solicitation of funds and
which is aimed at the
Church of Scientology, is so
broadly framed, according
to Samuel Rabinove, the
AJCommittee legal direc-
tor, "that it would be bur-
densome to all organiza-
tions engaged in legitimate
fund raising."
