Bomb Wrecks Convent in Ein Kerem
Danny Raskin's
I The Best of Everything
IF YOU'VE EVER
PICTURED a gourmet res-
taurant, here is one that
sure as shootin' wouldn't be
on the list . . . That is, until
recently. The Orchard
Lake Road spot between 12
Mile and 13 Mile is no
longer called The Honey
Tree . . . It is now Pine Hills
Restaurant . . . owned by
Mark Golematis, Andy
Karabalis and Lucus
Michalis.
Whoever thought one
would see flaming, tab-
leside cooking at the former
Honey Tree location? ..
And even more astounding,
the absolutely low prices
for dishes that people would
ordinarily pay twice and
three times as much.
Imagine Steak Diane at
$6.50, Steak au Poivre
$6.50, Beef Carpet Bag
$6.95, Pepper Steak
Maharaja $7, 14 oz. filet
$8.50, Tournedoes of Beef
Rossini $7.50, Veal Pic-
cante $6.75, Veal Marsala
$6.75, Veal Siciliano $6.75,.
Veal Cacciatore $6.75, Veal
Parmigiana $7, Veal Sal-
timbocca $7, Fresh Broiled
Whitefish $5.50, Fresh Red
Snapper $5.45, Filet of
Perch Almondine $5.50, etc.
Even Dover Sole ...
fresh . . . flown in daily .. .
almondine . deboned at
table ... plus special
sauce made tableside
$8.50.
How about Crepes
Suzette, Crepes Couzon,
Fresh Strawberries
flambe'd . . . and even fresh
peaches flambe'd . . . the
way Mark made them for
me when he was at The
Benchmark in Michigan
Inn . . . He has a lot of ex-
perience in fine dining and
tableside cooking . . . maitre
d' at Kingsley Inn, London
Chop House . . . originally
learning to cook in Paris
and sous chef 1 1/2 years at
world famous Lido . . . Mark
opened St. Regis here for the
Goodman brothers and on to
Kingsley, London Chop
House and Mario's before
opening the Ronde View at
Holiday Inn on Telegraph.
So much is made at the
tables . . . Caesar salads, too
. . . and there's still a lot of
class cooking ethics in Mark -
. . . who trained Andy and
Lucus . . . with result that
all do tableside cooking.
Only Provimi veal is used
. . . and everything is fresh
. . . nothing -frozen . . . No
foods are fried . . . sautees
are to order.
Working in many fine
restaurants, Mark saw
the high prices and al-
ways wanted his own
place to make a point ...
giving people the finest
available at low prices to
prove it was possible .
He challenges anybody
to serve better food . . .
even going so far as
guaranteeing it to be so.
There's also desserts like
Coffee Diablo, Spanish cof-
fee, Irish coffee, Greek cof-
fee, Cafe Amore and Cafe
Chateau.
A big seller in Pine Hills
Restaurant's daily receipts
are Fisherman Platters .. .
five scallops, three jumbo
shrimp and five filet of baby
perch . . . almondine sauce
with white wine, lemon but-
ter, heavy cream and spices
. . . $7.75.
Reason why prices are so
low says Mark sounds
plausible and makes sense
. . . "I'm my own chef. We
make money, I get paid. We
don't, I don't." Same is true
for Andy and Lucas.
Quite a difference from
the former Honey Tree
. Table cloths and cloth
napkins ... Red padded
chairs with white cane in
lounge ... back padded
chairs in dining room.
Alan Singleton plays
piano and sings in the
lounge Tuesdays through
Saturdays . . . with tables
for dining and a large semi-
circular bar.
There is seating for 210
. . . and without too many
people knowing about the
place yet, it already serves
well over 50 pounds of veal a
week . . . If it's like the veal
we tasted while there re-
cently, the meat man is
going to be mighty happy
with his ever-increasing or-
ders.
All veal dishes are served
with a very good Fettucini
Alfredo and fresh vegetable.
Jan. 27 at Pine Hills
will be Greek Night .
first of monthly ethnic
evenings ... Jewish,
Irish, etc.. .. Greek Night
will have belly dancer,
five-piece bouzouki band
... reservations taken for
six or more . . . and no
door charge.
Dinners at Pine Hills are
served seven days a week
until 12 midnight . . . After
12, soups, salads, sand-
wiches and snacks are being
offered . . . Our waitress
while there, Jackie Walker,
is most personable, smiling,
efficient and pleasant.
There's a big difference
now at the former Honey
Tree . . . with its plain, clean
decor . . . The excellent food
prepared by people who
know quality is at a locale
very unlikely to be known
for for gourmet dining .. .
But it is now . . . and those
prices are positively unbe-
lievable.
Mark Golematis is get-
ting his point across .. .
with emphasis . . . and a lot
of people are mighty glad.
RONALD LICHT SITS
in his plush new offices on
Northwestern and
Middlebelt . . . with its
wool-padded chairs . . . and
woolen covered walls . . .
looking across at a poster of
"Baby" on Broadway, of
which he is associate pro-
ducer with Ivan Bloch . . . It
is totally family-oriented
musical about how babies
change things in life . . . Its
musical scores have already
been acclaimed . . . and
"Baby" at the Barrymore
Theater, Broadway and
45th St., is becoming a Big
Apple hit show.
After four daughters, it
Friday, January 20, 1984 31
looks like Ron now has
twins . . . total opposites of
each other . . . Another
show of his and Ivan's, "The
Real Thing," opened in Bos-
ton, Dec. 5 and at the
Plymouth Theater on
Broadway Jan. 5 . . . It's
completely different from
"Baby" . . . "The Real
Thing" is about adultery
and the true meaning of
love.
According to Variety,
" 'The Real Thing' is
exhilarating theater that
deals with considerably
more than adultery among
the artsy set. It is at once
thought-provoking and
amusing as (playwright
Tom) Stoppard's zingy,
zappy dialogue — delivered
rat-tat-tat machine staccato
style, which is absolutely
breath-taking — explores

skirts of Jerusalem this
week. There were no casual-
ties but considerable dam-
age to the building.
The bombing was the
JERUSALEM-(JTA) — A
bomb exploded on the
doorstep of the Russian Or-
thodox convent in Ein
Kerem on the southern out-
latest of a series of such in-
cidents at Christian and
Moslem religious sites in
and around Jerusalem and
the West Bank.
