art and writing, relation-
ships, caring and loving."
Kevin Kelly in the Boston
Globe wrote, 'The Real
Thing' is theatrical genius,
beginning to end" . . . cal-
ling it "the best play of the
Boston season and quite
likely to be the best play
Broadway will see for sev-
eral months."
OCTOBER WAS first
year of Vassili's owned by
hard-working wife and hus-
band team, Despina and
Bill Anastasiou . . . on
Southfield between 11 and
12 Mile Rd. . . . with seating
for 150 plus seven at a
counter in the clean, open-
area restaurant . . . In the
year, Despina and Bill have
molded their eatery into
something much more .. .
It's gotten to be like a meet-
ing place . . . with people se-
eing so many familiar faces
. . . including those they ha-
ven't seen in many years.
Also, people even call now
for reservations . . . and
aren't turned down . . . Mel
and Etta Mermel say, "It's
just like coming home" .. .
and rave about Vassili's
homemade soups . . . There
are seven during the week
. . . with one changing each
day and lemon rice remain-
ing at all times . . . Sid and
Marilyn Frumkin are some-
times at Vassili's four times
a week.
It has a huge Greek-
American menu . . . and is a
good family dining opera-
tion . . . very reasonably
priced to go along with its
wide selection of tasty,
well-prepared food.
Vassili's is one of the
few places that have veg-
etarian mousaka ... and
its Special Salad or
Spinach Salad a la Gre-
que are favorites.
During recent
snowstorms, Vassili's was
among the not-too-many
where parking lots were
cleared immediately .. .
making for much ap-
preciated good parking.
Some time ago, I raved
about the delicious pineap-
ple cream cake Despina
makes . . . She later re-
ceived a bouquet of flowers
with its card reading, "To
the girl who makes that
wonderful pineapple cream
pie" . . . It really is that
good.
TOP 40 dance band, Citi-
zens, is appearing at Hur-
ley's in Northfield Hilton,
Crooks Rd. and 1-75, Mon-
days through Saturdays .. .
til Jan. 28 ... no cover ...
Hurley's is also open Sun-
day evenings with live
bands performing songs
from the Motown era.
MIGHT BE one of the
smallest sitdown table res-
taurants in the country .. .
let alone among the tiniest
strictly kosher eateries .. .
This is Cafe Katan (small in
Hebrew) at Mertz' Bakery
on Coolidge north of Nine
Mile Rd.. . . Seats only 16 at
eight little tables covered
with checkered cloths .. .
Leo Mertz has it open Mon-
day through Thursday, 11
a.m. to 3 p.m.. . . with pizza,

felafel, tuna and egg salads,
stuffed • tomato, potato
salad, green salad.
Because Mertz' is a bak-
ery, the tuna and egg can be
put on any kind of bread .. .
plus kaiser or onion rolls,
bagel or croissant . . . at no
extra charge.
The bakery gals, like
pleasant Rose Zubeck, also
double as waitresses and
cooks.
Cafe Katan is probably
among the country's most
unusual restaurants, too .. .
because it doesn't look like
one except for the tables and
chairs . . . The kosher pizza
has already received na-
