Detection of Poisoned Food
Simplified by Haifa U. Prof.
HAIFA — Researchers in
the physiological psychol-
ogy laboratories at the Uni-
versity of Haifa have de-
veloped a new process for
detecting the source of foods
that have been contami-
nated with poison.
The process, developed by
Prof. Barry Berger, makes
use of well-known princi-
ples of behavioral psychol-
ogy that relate to humans as
well as to animals. The test
is based upon the phenom-
enon of taste aversion and
laboratory animals are used
to indicate exactly which
food substance has been
contaminated.
Prof. Berger became in-
terested in this subject fol-
lowing the mysterious mass
food poisoning of a few
dozen students in June
1982. In that instance, stu-
dents in the cafeteria had
all received coffee from the
same urn. What bothered
Prof. Berger, and other
University of Haifa resear-
chers, was the three-day
delay in discovering the
poison's source.
According to Prof. Be-
rger,. this new method is
significant as it will en-
able the authorities to
discover the source of a

gious program on state-
controlled television, was

Olim Volunteers
Build Defenses
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Several hundred new im-
migrants have spent the
last few weeks helping the
army build and maintain
fortifications in the Jordan
Valley. The World Zionist
Organization's aliya de-
partment called the project
a great success.
It is strictly voluntary
and, according to the WZO,
contributed toward the
newcomers' speedy absorp-
tion and integration into Is-
raeli life. It also changed the
soldiers' stereotypical
image of new olim in addi-
tion to reducing the time
served by reservists and
contributing to defense.

The new test is based, in
part, on the habit of ani-
