WJC Leaders
Meet Dobrynin,
U.S. Advisers

NEW YORK (JTA) -
Edgar Bronfman, president
of the World Jewish Con-
gress, met privately with
Soviet Ambassador Anatoly
Dobrynin at the Soviet Em-
bassy in Washington last
week and had meetings
later with Secretary of State
George Shultz at the State
Department and National
Security Adviser Robert
McFarlane at the White
House.
No details of these meet-
ings were disclosed. A WJC
spokesman confirmed, how-
ever, that East-West rela-
tions and the latest Middle
East developments were
discussed and suggested
that positive movement on
Soviet-American relations
may be near.
Jewish leaders who ac-
companied Bronfman to the
White House were Israel
Singer, executive director of
the WJC; Rabbi Arthur
Hertzberg, vice president;
Rabbi Arthur Schneier,
chairman of the American
Section; Elan Steinberg, di-
rector of the American Sec-
tion; and Rabbi Alexander
Schindler, chairman of its
East-West Commission.

8 Life Sentences
Asked for Nazi

BONN (JTA) - The State
Prosecutor of Hesse has de-
manded eight life sen-
tences for Hermann Eben-
der, a 74-year-old resident
of Fulda identified by wit-
nesses as the murderer of
eight JeWish inmates in the
Dora Mittelbau concentra-
tion camp in Thueringen
shortly before Germany's
surrender in World War II.
Ebender, a gypsy and
himself a camp inmate,
turned collaborator. The
prosecution charges that he
murdered the Jewish in-
mates for no motive other
than enjoyment of the
crime. In two instances he
acted alone and in six he
had accomplices. The kil-
lings occurred between
January-March 1945.
Ebender has been living
in obscurity in Fulda since
the war. When he was ar-
rested in November 1982,
he claimed mistaken iden-
tity. But he was identified
by 49 witnesses who ap-
peared at his trial.

AJC Supports
Koch Measure

NEW YORK - The
American Jewish Congress
has filed an amicus brief in
the New York State Court of
Appeals supporting Mayor
Ed Koch's order which
would set aside construction
opportunities for locally
based businesses that are
located in disadvantaged
neighborhoods or employ
the economically disadvan-
taged.
The legality of the
mayor's order has been
challenged by the Subcon-
tractors Trade Association,
an organization represent-
ing small and moderate
sized construction firms.
