WASHINGTON—Soviet
Jewish Prisoner of Con-
science Anatoly
Shcharansky, half-way
through a 13-year sentence
in a Soviet prison, is in fail-
ing health and needs to be
hospitalized.
The Union of Councils for
Soviet Jews reported in
Washington that
Shcharansky's mother, Ida
Milgrom, visited
Shcharansky Jan. 5. Her
son is suffering severe heart
and chest pains. Despite ap-
peals from Milgrom and
Shcharansky's wife, Avital,
Soviet authorities have re-
fused to hospitalize him.
The UCSJ has asked that
letters of protest be sent to
Soviet Ambassador Anatoly
Dobrynin in Washington, to
U.S. Secretary of State
George Shultz, and - to
Sergei P. Burenkov, Minis-
ter of Health, 3
Rakhmanovsky Perevlok,
Moscow, RSFSR, U.S.S.R.
In conjunction with
this campaign, Joel Ger-
shenson and Jerry Ro-
gers of the Detroit Soviet
Jewry Committee of the
Jewish Community
Council have asked area
congregations to observe
Shcharansky's 36th
birthday at Shabbath
services Jan. 20-21, and
asked that letters be writ-
ten demanding Shchar-

rabbi arrested, according to
the Student Struggle for
Soviet Jewry (SSSJ) and the
JCSJ.
Nadezhda Fradkova, 36,
of Leningrad, who for six
years has sought to emi-
grate to Israel, began a pro-
test hunger strike on Dec.
23. On Jan. 3, she was forci-
bly taken from her home to
Psychiatric Hospital 9.

Marcus Sieff is to retire next
July as chairman of Marks
and Spencer, Britain's lead-
ing retail chain co-founded
by his grandfather, Michael
Marks, in Leeds 100 years
ago.
He will remain its
president. Lord Rayner will
