A 24-hour-a-day, toll-free
telephone hotline for Jews
in serious need, the first of
some 66 programs the
Jewish Federation of Met-
ropolitan Chicago is plan-
ning to help an estimated
37,000 Jewish poor people,
has been launched by the
federation.
Callers are connected to a
specially trained social
worker or volunteer able to
help them get emergency
food and shelter, crisis
counseling, day care, health
care and legal, financial and
job aid, according to Charles
Goodman, federation presi-
dent.
Goodman said that, since
the service started on Oct. 5,

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The
newspaper Yediot Ahronot
discounts Israel's mounting
foreign debts. It says that
the debt of $10 billion 10
years ago equates to today's
$28 billion debt when infla-
tion is considered.

Logical
Deduction.

Are bills turning
your life story into "The
Case of the Disappearing
Paycheck"? Does all
your hard-earned money
seem to vanish without a
trace left to save?
Then perhaps you
should investigate United
States Savings Bonds.
Because saving with
Bonds is so simple, it's
elementary. Especially
if you join the Payroll
Savings Plan.
Once you sign up,
you see, a small part of
each paycheck is auto-
matically set aside to buy
Bonds.
Which means as soon
as you're paid, you save.
Before you're left trying
to deduce where it all
went.
Buy U.S. Savings
Bonds through the
Payroll Savings Plan.
And take the mystery
out of saving.

the calls have been mainly
from persons seeking
emergency cash and
employment. He estimated
the call-in service will soon
be getting 500 calls a
month.
Goodman also said the
Federation expects that 15
of the 66 programs will be
operative by next June, at a
cost estimated at $715,000,
including $200,000 for
emergency cash grants and
loans. He said these prog-
rams will bring to $28.7
million the total that feder-
ation and its eight social
welfare and health care
agencies has spent on ser-
vices to the poor of all faiths
and races within the last
year.
