Seven Arts Feature
A film on the life and
career of Pope John Paul II
was previewed last week be-
fore a large, elegant audi-
ence at the Lincoln Center
in New York. While the 2 1/2
hour film on the Pope is
primarily intended for
Catholic audiences, it is
clear that it will have far-
reaching positive reso-
nances for Jews.
To be shown in February
1984 (date still to be set)
over the CBS-TV network,
the script depicts in drama-
tic form the evolution of
Pope John Paul from his
childhood in Wadowice, Po-

In each of the phases of
his growth and develop-
ment there are dramatic
episodes of his warm friend-
ship with a young Jewish
boy, Theodor Krawich, who
suffers from the endemic
anti-Semitism in Poland.
As Karol Wojtyla, a young
devout Catholic, he strongly
condemns the anti-
Semitism his Jewish friend
suffers, saying, "-It's the
exact opposite of what
Christ taught."

firmly rejecting anti-
Semitic charges of other
bishops against Jews.
Albert Finney, the gifted
British actor, is extraordi-
nary as Bishop-Cardinal-
then Pope John Paul. My
clear impression is the
Catholics in the audience
were deeply moved by his
performance and hopefully
were equally moved by the
Pope's positive views
toward Jews and his rejec-
tion of anti-Semitism.
Detroiters Petition for Begun
A petition drive has been
launched on behalf of Soviet
activist Iosif Begun by the
Detroit Soviet Jewry Corn-
mittee of the Jewish Co-
mmunity Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit (DSJC).
Soviet refusnik Iosif
Begun has been tried and
found guilty on charges of
"anti-Soviet agitation and
propaganda" as a result of
his active teaching of the
Hebrew language, distribu-
tion of Jewish cultural
material, and continued ap-
plication for a visa to emi-
grate to Israel.
His arrest and sentence of
seven years in prison and an
additional five years in
internal exile violate inter-
national law outlined in ac-
cords signed by the Soviet
Union.
Joel D. Gershenson
and Lawrence Jackier,
who chair the DSJC, say
the petition drive keeps
attention focused on the
Soviets' continued
human rights violations
and lets Soviet officials
know that this action
"has infuriated us."
Signed petitions will be
forwarded to Yuri V. An-
dropov, General Secretary
of the Soviet Union on Nov.
24.

damir Livshits of Lenin-
grad, a scientist of applied
mathematics and econom-
ics, announced his hunger
strike to "let the world know
of the plight of Jews in the
Soviet Union," the Union of
Councils for Soviet Jews re-
ported.
Frustrated by several re-
fusals since 1981 to emi-
grate to Israel and join fam-
ily there, Livshits insists he

the intellect while it

did not multiply the aims
and objects of the under-
standing, while it fixed and
simplified those of the de-
sires and passions.

will remain on his hunger
strike "until death" if
necessary. His wife, Anna,
will join him in a hunger
strike next week if there is
no response to their pleas to
emigrate.
Both Vladamir and Anna
lost their jobs when they
first applied for a visa.
