Ex-Detroiter Gets Marathon 2nd Place

Rachel Portner, former
Detroiter of Honolulu, was
the second woman finisher
in last Sunday's Detroit
Free Press Marathon race
in downtown Detroit and
Windsor.
Mrs. Portner, 29, finished

the race in two hours, 50
minutes and 29 seconds.
Mrs. Portner married Dr.
Bernard Portner eight
years ago in Detroit. She
was born in Israel. The
couple now live in Honolulu
with their two daughters.

Dr. Portner's parents, Sam
and Ethel Portner, now live
in Ashkelon, Israel.
Mrs. Portner's time,
under three hours, qualifies
her for the Olympic trials.
In her only previous
marathon, last May in Hon-
olulu, she completed the
26-mile race in 3:12.51.
