THE LARGE BLACK
limousine pulled up in front
of the little restaurant just
back of a car wash on Or-
chard Lake Road, south of
14 Mile . . . One of the own-
ers of Orchard Family Re-
staurant was standing at a
window and became
frightened . . . Alex Kay had
seen them in Russia. . . a
big car meant the KGB sec-
ret police.
But his fears were quickly
alleviated by customer
Boris Greisdorf . . . telling
who it was . . . a local
community-ite personage
who had been there for din-
ner and asked if they made
varenikis (put on menu
since) ... Alex had said yes,
n't find sour cher-
but could
ries anywhere ... The gent
iver two
had his driver del
cases . . . Alex, wife Maya,
partner Lazar Izrailov and
his wife Nina stayed seven
hours making 650 varenikis
.. Customer, along with
family and friends, says
Alex, ate about 100 (they
come eight to a portion) .. .
and took home the remain-
ing 550.
Their Orchard Family
Restaurant is one of those
little "sleepers" you seldom
hear about . . . It's directly
across Orchard Lake Road
from Tally Hall and Hun-
ters Square- . in back of
King Kar Wash at the
Orchard:14 Shopping
Center that also rents to
K-Mart.
It's just a little place .. .
with 10 booths and six
counter seats adding up
to about 46 capacity .. .
very clean, and certainly
not pretentious-looking
with a very plain decor
. . . but good, wholesome
food prepared by hard-
working people in a
small, neat kitchen that
proves good food can be
made in a closet-if neces-
sary.
Orchard Family Restaur-
ant is the former site of Kos-
tandina's Greek eatery .. .
Alex, here nine years from
Russia, and Lazar, three
years from Russia, both
speak English very fluently
. . . and opened on June 16
as the Olympic Restaurant
... Idea was to use theme of
the Olympics, but people
thought it was another
Greek restaurant like Kos-
tandina's . . . and so the
name was soon changed to
Orchard Family Restaur-
ant.
Alex had been in the re-
staurant business out Wal-
led Lake way . . . plus the
Continental Deli at North-
land Medical Center on
Greenfield . and Alex's
Delicatessen, Nine Mile and
Telegraph.
Lazar is a master at cater-
ing . . . He was pastry chef
at Michigan Inn, plus cook-
ing specialties and doing ice
carvings . . . Three days at
the Golden Mushroom,
Lazar replaced a chef tem-
porarily ill . . . doing every-
thing . . . smoking fish,
making barley soup, chic-
ken noodle soup, clam
chowder, Russian borscht,
etc. . . . and started as a

Failure is, in a sense, the
highway to success, inas-
much as every discovery of
what is false leads us to seek
ernestly after what is true,

and every fresh experience
points out some form of
error which we shall after-
ward carefully avoid.

DOMINICO'S

part-time chef with the cat-
ering department at Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
He was so good, Lazar
became full-time, making
things like halla bread,
kishke, molds, five-tiered
wedding cakes, Russian
specialties of pelmeni,
lula kabob, blintzes, var-
enikis, cerpla, etc.
Lazar is from a restaur-
ant family . . . and was
taught catering by his
father when 11 years old .. .
both grandfather and dad
each having restaurants in
Moscow . . . A brother, Alex,
has arrived here and is now
at the Orchard Family Re-
